A huge flush... and a casing question
    #3945684 - 03/20/05 08:28 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Well i just returned from a 3 day weekend to find my dozen cakes in full beautiful bloom.

This is my 3rd batch of cakes over the past 6 months or so, and 10 days ago I crumbled 2 cakes and tried casing for the first time. I was put off by it before because I was too lazy to go on a scavenger hunt to get all the materials listed in Casing Mix 101. Instead I simply bought some potting soil from Lowe's, didn't bother sterilizing it, and not only do I already have mycelium, but a few little pins have popped up through the soil! I followed the tek on GGreatOne234's website (http://www.shroomwizard.com/GGreat.html) and have this to show for it after only 10 days:

The pins are hard to see but theyre in the lower left corner.

Anyway, my question is: after a cake flushes, particularly for the first time, can it be crumbled and cased? Seeing how promising (and extremely simple!) this whole casing thing is, I'd like to try casing a few more of my cakes that have just flushed for the first time. Let me know what you think.

Hey, I asked the same question and was told yes, you can crumble a cake and case it after a first flush. I plan on doing it with some KSSS as soon as they're done with their flush. Good Luck.

make sure after the first flush that you run it under water and get any pins/knots off of it. if you don't, any that were going to grow will grow INSIDE the casing, and if there are some aborts that were too small to pick off, your fingers will take care of them. just wash your hands with antibacterial soap before you do it, tap water is fine. that's how i've done it and haven't had contam issues... though i'm sure someone will naysay and tell you it will contam. the cakes are fully colonized, so i really wouldn't worry about it. good luck.
