Room temps between 68-80 degrees is all you need.

Small heating pad wired below bottom shelf should do the trick. Most heating pads have a 3 position switch (low - medium - high).

If you want better temp control, you can buy a dial type switch that are used for reptile heating pads (pictured with pad - above).

Set pad position switch on HIGH, have it plugged into dial switch, set dial on LOW & adjust according to needs.

A modified Coolmist (or Coolmist clone) piped in to a Martha is great for keeping RH high & providing good air exchange.

You DO NOT want pad IN CONTACT with trays. Hang under bottom shelf, or off back of bottom shelf (heat rises).

ok..i was worried about that...so the ambient heat from the pad will be enough to heat the entire chamber?

thanks

so it sounds like the martha is still dependant on outside heat?
damn....i was hoping it would be more self sustaining...

A space heater can be costly though if you ran in for many hours every single day of the month.

if a person is dealing with a "open fruiting area" casings and whatnot swim would suggest a steam humidifier on a dimmer of the appropriate rating(variability).

swim said he got his setup at a perfect temp with one of those. it got the humidity to about 85@ the proper heat. the rest (air exchange and humidity) where supplied with a cool mist humidfier.

his room was about 5x3

quick Q, will an ultrasonic on a timer supply enough humidity to a martha sized enclosure? i'd like to just run the ultrasonic i just bought and not have to mess w/ a cool mist if i don't need to, TIA

i think soopa's refering to the resevoir at the bottom of the martha, where water vapor condenses/collects

heating pad would/could melt that super thin plastic on teh bottom (thinner than the sides).

and the room temp doesnt heat the martha too much. My humidifiers apparently blow cold (coolmist and ultrasonic). Its 75 in my room, 69/70 in my martha with teh coolmist on. All i did was hang my 18in flourescent light to the ceiling and that was enough to raise the temp to 75/77 inside.

you were on to something... insulation, or lack thereof, is the issue precisely. I'd be willing to bet that a heating pad would be far more effective if the chamber utilised more efficient insulation. try some mylar or maybe a blanket. this is the answer to the next post stating how uneconomical a space heater would be.

As a side note, space heaters equipped with a fan will rapidly dehumidify a chamber. You will probably have more luck with oil-filled radiant heaters.
