Ok im going to discuss what the term 'Ego' means to me
    #3943675 - 03/20/05 12:56 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

In this post i will attempt to give my final stance in view of the term 'ego'. This is not another post for people to debate the meaning of this term. I'm just giving my view in relation to this term, you are welcome to do the same...

The effort to secure our happiness, to maintain ourselves in relation to something else, is the process of 'ego'. But this effort is futile because there are continual gaps in our seemingly solid world, continual cycles of death and rebirth, constant change. the sense of continuity and solidity of self is an illusion. there is really no such thing as ego, soul, or Atman. It is a succession of confusions which create ego. The process which is ego actually consists of a flicker of confusion, a flicker of aggression, a flicker of grasping - all of which exist only in the moment. Since we cannot hold on to the present moment, we cannot hold on to me and mine and make them solid things.

the experience of on-self relating to other things is actually a momentary discrimination, a fleeting thought. If we generate these fleeting thought fast enough, we can create an illusion of continuity and solidity. it is like watching a movie, the individual film frames are played so quickly that they generate the illusion of continual movement. So we build up an idea, a preconception that self and other are solid and continuous. And once we have this idea we manipulate our thoughts to confirm it, and are afraid of any contrary evidence. It is this fear of exposure, this denial of impermanence that imprisons us. It is only by acknowledging impermanence that there is the chance to die and the space to be reborn and the possibility of appreciating life as a creative process....

man, my vision of what "ego" means is still very blury and unfocused.

I think ego is just the result of the reaction between the material realm (body) and the metaphysical realm (mind/soul). Its what happens when the two realms merge/unite together in a body capable of self awareness.

Do you think animals have an ego?

The face you wear, could be your personality?
What you think about it, could be your ego?

I think most things with consciousness get into the movie and identify with the hero.
it could be a dog - easily.
it could be a bird - for sure.
might it be an ant? I wish I had not stepped on so many. I am not sure they run citta or get a chance to watch what they run.

"The effort to secure our happiness, to maintain ourselves in relation to something else, is the process of 'ego'."

Yes i think animals are involved in this process therefore have ego.

Pride is a symptom of ego not the actual process.

Western ideas always seem to point to the symptom and not the cause. I guess thats why antidepressants are given out like candy?

I like your film analogy. When you take a close look, it isn't a continuous flow but a series of frames. When we let go of the process and allow the film to play, we create the Now. The faster we move to blur the frames into a continuous flow, the more it seems we're standing still. Be the director of your life, learn how each frame works individually, *and* as part of the whole.

The ego physically exists as part of your brain that creates tunnel realities, that connect to form a world model and a projection of self, of who your ego thinks you are. Will you let your ego direct the movie of your life? The ego also exists as the projection itself, which is illusory in that it is an illusion, but which is also real if you believe it is and associate your identity with your ego's projection.

It's not a matter of destroying your ego completely because it will always exist physically as part of your brain, nor is it a matter of dissolving the projection for you need it to communicate with society and the majority of its members that recognize only the projection as reality. Rather, it's a matter of consciously choosing what you project.

This choice often requires no action on your part because as the projector, as the observer, you work from a vast context. The things happening IRL that you record on camera are part of you. When you view them on video, the video of your mind's eye, this link becomes more apparent?the movie's plot is symbolic of your own internal conflict. Similarly, IRL, whatever happens is 'meant to be', a result of karma, God's will, etc., just another movie meant to teach you another lesson, again symbolic of your inner self.
