Can someone PM me with a link to a manual for the AA 15.5 qt?

Thanks.

Hmm well I fired it up last night just to test it out and everything seemed to work properly.

One thing that is different which I'm not sure about is a lack of a pressure controller.

The AA has a pressure gauge, a vent pipe (I think that's what it's called, it's a little pointy thing that swivels) and a small nut on top. There's nothing to control the pressure inside except how hot I make the burner. Is that normal? I had it up to 15 psi and although some steam started to come out it seemed to work fine.

Does it have the rocker with the round weight?

Or does it have the pressure relief valve?

Answer that...and we can help you.

Can you describe what either one looks like?

On top there is the handle in center, pressure gauge on the right, small cylindrical piece with a bullet shaped thing on it's side on the left side and a small hexagonal nut in the front middle.

Does that have a toggle on top of it?

To release the pressure?

I'll go get some pictures...be right back.

ok

does it have this on it.

This is the pressure relief valve style.

Closed position

Open position

If its not this type on yours.
You have the jiggler weight type.

I need to know which one you have.

Yeah it looks like that, instead of having the pawn looking thing that opens or closes it has a pointy bullet looking thing but other than that they are very similar.

good

well...the good news is that I can help you.

the bad news is that I don't have a manual.

I'll write up how I use mine...for you...and be back in a few minutes.

ok

here is how I use mine.

Do not walk away from the pressure cooker when you are using it...and getting to know how to use it...I can not stress this enough.
I still watch mine like a hawk...and I know how to use mine well.

put the rack in the bottom...if you don't have a rack put a towel in the bottom.

Fill it with 2" of water...add a little Vinegar to the water.
Never run the pressure cooker dry!
Test your pressure cooker if you have to...trial run.

put the jars into the pressure cooker.

put the lid squarely on...and tighten the lid down evenly.

Open the "release" valve and fire up the burner...Turn the heat on at a setting from 2/3 to the highest setting until steam flows from the relief valve.

After a steady stream of steam blows out of it for a
few minutes get a spoon or something and close the relief valve.

This will purge the air out of the pc...and it will start to build up pressure.

Watch the gauge and when it hits 10 psi turn down the heat to medium.

The pressure will continue to rise and you need to watch the heat setting to maintain 15psi.

You will have to play with your stove setting a little to find the right setting.

Use the relief valve to release pressure if it goes over 15 psi...use the spoon or something to release the pressure.
Wear an oven mitt if you feel more comfortable.

Turn the stove down til it stays on 15 psi.

Then when it stays at 15 psi...start timing it.

When your time is up...depending on what you are pressure cooking.
Pull the pressure cooker off the burner...and put it on another burner that is cool to the touch.

Let it cool down.
And let the PC de-pressurize at room temperature.

The depressurazation can take anywhere from 5-20 minutes, depending on the size of the pressure cooker and the amounts of the jars in it.

If you are preparing whole grains, you will now want to wait around 30 minutes and then take the hot jars out and shake them to distribute the wetter and drier kernels.
If you are preparing PF jars it's best to leave them cool down in the pressure cooker over night.

hope this was helpful.

TC

Thank you, that is very helpful. Am I correct in saying I regulate the pressure inside with the burner as opposed to automatic regulation?

Also what purpose does that last little hexagonal nut serve?

I found that putting jars in a double boiler for two hours or so got them just as disinfected as a PC

There is very minimal cracking as well, and no burning on the bottom like in a regular pot.

YW

yes you regulate the pressure by using the settings on your stove...to control the temp.

the hexagonal nut on the pressure relief valve?

I don't think so. The pressure gauge is on one side and the pressure relief valve is on the other side. In the middle towards the front is another hexagonal nut, I'm guessing it's some sort of emergency relief but I don't know.

Yeah it looks to have a few years (decades) on it. But it's an AA and it looks hella good to me. I was reading something about lubricating the lip for suction? That doesn't apply to the AA right? Metal to metal goodness.

You can get an AA PC "instruction" manual HERE for $5.50. There are none online that I know of.

Yours is an older model, which I prefer (over the new ones with the pressure weight). I would suggest you buy a second pressure relief toggle & remove the blow out safety plug & screw the second relief toggle in its place.

Two pressure relief toggles are how AA Sterilizers are set up.
They will release pressure around 24 / 26 pounds.
A new pressure gauge would not be a bad investment either.

From looking at that site it appears I have a 15 1/2 qt Pressure Sterilizer not Pressure Cooker. Even better I guess. Mine looks very similar to the 1915x. I know the pressure gauge shows 20psi as the beginning of the "Caution" zone.
