Birthed without full colonization maybe contam? Pic Added
    #3943137 - 03/20/05 09:59 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,

First post and I'm a new shroom grower as well. My first jars are coming along fine (used PF tek) and one of them had several large pins on it so I decided to birth it. There was about a half inch of uncolonized area on the bottom of the jar which has now (20ish hours later) covered itself with offwhite what looks like mold. It also has tiny water droplets busting out of this area. I figure the reason for this is because the substrate was to dense at the bottom (too much water in the mix).

My question is, is this contam or normal when birthing before full colonization?

I have a couple other jars in the same boat as this one and am unsure what to do.

Thanks!

sounds like cobweb mold, if its really fluffy then you can be sure that it is,
you'll need to sanitize yout terrarium well before you put any other cakes in it
and in the future, ilmit the exposure to light of cakes that are nearing colonization

Looks healthy to me. Generally fluffly=mycelium and whispy/grey=cobweb mold.

That spot looks like myc grown out without the glass jar matting it flat. I don't think anyone would recommend birthing without full colonization because of contam danger, but it looks like you dodged the bullet this time.

Its B+.

So, eventhough the other jars are pinning, they should not be birthed until they are fully colonized?

Correct.

To do otherwise is a big contamination risk.
