Guitar Issues (technical help wanted)

I have recently dug out an old "Wayne's World" Fender Stratocaster from ~1992 that still in quite nice shape. However, when I plug it into my amp, it does not create any output (except occasionally a slight increase in ambient hum if the strings are strummed). I assume there is something wrong with the output jack itself or its wiring, and hopefully nothing more severe. I know for a fact that the amp works, as I can play my Yamaha PSR-275 keyboard through it no problem.
Can I get some advice about potentially repairing this myself, or should I just take it into a music shop and shell out the cash? I have only just started playing guitar, know little, and don't wanna get taken for a fool, and have them gut the pickups and all and charge me mad for parts and labor (as I'm not sure the guitar is worth enough to make that worthwhile).
Quotes online for rewiring an output jack run like $20 + parts if need be. Is this reasonable?
Thanks for all of your help; I will greatly appreciate any replies! Do it for the sake of the music.

if you touch the strings, does the hum change?
sounds to me like a main ground is out. open the back panel ( or if it doesnt have one, remove the front pickguard) and look for a black wire that is just hanging loose..... or any wire that is just hanging loose for that matter.
can you solder?

i doubt its anything complex. check for loose wires and check the jack if u can. other than that, take it to a shop, shouldn't be more than 20 bucks
