 Bad Ass PF Cake container!!!

Ok, i was thinking that the normal jars that everyone uses for PF cakes are not quite proportioned right. too tall and skinny. like a cylinder.. well, i think they need more surface space to adequatly produce shrooms... so i looked around and after some searching i came up w/ a great sized cake... Everyone knows the cases that holds like 50 CD-R's.. well, when you flip this upside down, it makes a nice sized cake. and they're polypropelene (sp?), they PC just fine, i have 2 big cakes now. they're great. everyone should try at least 1 of these. i admit that they're not as easy to come by as a normal widemouth jar, but the cake size is much better! anyone else have any cool container ideas? let me know!

my myc. takes off fast, i don't really worry about time when colonizing.. and i inject at like 5-6 points on each container.. w/ LC... so. quite a bit faster! everyone should try LC's..

liquid cultures... like karo tek.. spores grow myceliem in a karo/water mix you then suck that up into a syringe and knock up whatever bags or jars you want.... and since the spores are already myc. it grows much much faster...

Actually this isn't that bad of an idea.
So you have you pressure cooked them...cool.
They don't melt at all?
The CD container isn't taller than...a Tall 1/2 pint jar.
I've had great results using the Tall 1/2 pint jars over the years.
Yeah they are wider...but using more inoculation points could help with colonization times.
I could see cutting the center disc holder down in size...this would make a good reservoir for wicking water into the cakes.

yes, i pc'd 2 differnt kinds and both held up great, 1 was really sturdy and 1 was kinda weak, but both held up perfect. they were both the PP 5 plastic, and i put 6 holes in the bottom of the actual CD case. but turned upside down ,the bottom ,(w/ the rod type holder for the cd) is the lid. i hope i made that understandable... but anyways, try it out. i like it.. i have 2 colonizing right now... i'll keep everyone up to date... it would be funny if this actually took off as a good grow idea, but i can see it happening. i bet tonight a lot of people are gonna stash their extra un-burned CD's somewhere and make some PF cakes.. lol.

If you make the cake with the tube thingy in the middle, when you birth it, there'll be nothing there..you could throw some verm down, dunk and roll that baby, throw verm down that hole in the middle and on top. Soak with syringe in the middle and a mister and rock on. If it fits in the hydrapod, that will look cool

no doubt SPimp, good idea...built in well and everything. I take it ground grain works best when trying to make a cake, as opposed to whole grain rye or WBS..

This is a big brf cake. Just break up reg jars and let them grow together a few days. May be faster then waiting for a big one to colonize.
and next to some reg size cakes (this wood thing was the first martha prototype)

thanx for the link RK, i remember actually reading that post as it was active... lol, sam1912 does have some nice cakes.. Magash, that's one bad ass little box you've got there... ok, the cd case cake's that i made are going to be bad ass, i think... oh, well, we'll see, 1 is knocked up w/ PES hawaiian, and 1 is w/ Tasmanian... it's a race now, i want to see which one colonizes faster, which one grows better, and wet/dry totals for each flush and total... so, i guess i'll throw some pix on here w/ the first signs of growth....

that's cool man... i'm curious how many people did it total... i bet there's several who looked at this post and ran and did it right away... lol, my first thought was that it wouldn't hold up in the PC... but it did, so, i did another one... i'm ready to see these bad boys growing.. i can't wait to fill up that little hole w/ some water.. no one thinks that a sterilized karo/water tek would be a good mix to put in the "well"? if it is sterile then it wouldn't be a contam risk would it?

i've actually been using cd cases for a few months... i just do standard 1 pint wbs jars, colonize, then crumble into my cd tower covers and fruit
after first flush i remove cake from case and set on tin foil for rest of life, yields pretty good around the side, but usually on my first flush (even covered w/ tin foil) i'll get pins around the sides, which i why i started taking them out after the first flush

i'm not sure about Roadkill's but mine is knocked up w/ PES hawaiian. it's showing strong myc growth. i don't have a camera or i'd post a few pix, but soon as my friend comes through with his camera i'll post some pix. anywayz, no contams, good growth. i see this being a good hawaiian cake!!!

I use the large Ziplock and a few Glad containers for my spore printing.
I have like 80 of the large Ziplock's.
I do have some of the smaller ones...like in agar's picture.

It will not be long & the PP containers (pint & quart) above with attached lid filter & port will be marketed by a vendor. These puppies are tough enough for WBS/RYE spawn & can be reused like glass jars.

i had a PP 5 plastic container melt down last night, not a CD case, but a small tub, like a thick cool whip container, but it melted down. my cd cases are not warped or damaged in any way, i have to admit tho that i expected them to melt, but they didn't. not sure which brand your using, but i had a memorex and a sony to start out w/ they both did fine. i'm about to do another memorex today. i even pressure cooked a cake in one, and waited for it to cool, then took it out of the case to check for the cosistancy throughout the cake, and it looked good. the little "watering hole" in the middle stays in tact perfectly, and yes you can fill it up.

it's all good RK, holler back when you got time... as for steam sterilizing... i'm not sure, i'd PC it, something that big you want to make sure to get it good and sterile, just because it takes a little longer to colonize and contams have a longer window of opportunity to get growing. but, good luck to all, and i hope my little idea does well for everyone!

as for the cd case cake i have w/ the PES HAWAIIAN, it is almost fully colonized and it is about to be dunked, i will post pix of dunking and fruiting. i'm curious to see how everyone elses big cakes are turning out, let me know! recent pix would be great! i'm going to post w/ pix in the next day or two. my cake is looking awesome, to be honest it's coming along WAY better than even the 1/2 pint tall wide mouth jars. on the cake i did a 6 point innoc. 5 evenly around the top, and one in the center (near the watering hole). it's going to be nice having this thing in the fruiting chamber in a day or two...

I used this idea for an experiment @ mycotopia with a friends PESA print. It's a good idea with lousy results IMO. X-Nay the 50 cd containers for sure unless you want headaches!  Jars are much easier.

what went wrong w/ your cake? did it fruit, just not very well? or did it not make it that far? mine seemed to colonize nicely, now all it's gotta do is fruit. thanx for the input hotnutz!

Don't let me piss in your Cheerios man. I was having a crap of a day yesterday. Sorry! By the way, steam sterilizing works fine for them. I did mine for 105 minutes with no contamination. The prob I had was once I sterilized them, I think the containers stretched some during the process. The substrate wasn't packed tightly in them anymore. Did you do yours upside down? You know the base of the conainer up? I did mine that way with the nock up holes in the base. I never fruited them. I used them for spawn.

hey no prob man, i didn't take it harshly. i was just curious what happend. i did mine w/ the holes up. so it would make it upside down from how the cd's came in it. i melted holes in the base and used that for the top. mine stayed packed and everything, but on one cake i tested the consistancy after i PC'd it, and it was all good, but i noticed that the rod that held the cd's on the inside had moved slightly, but no big deal. i think i'm going to fruit this cake, just to say i did, lol. well, again, thanx for the input!

You what enthused me about them was the posts in the cd container. It makes a nice place for an inner resevoir filled with moistened vermiculite.

hey, just an update on my PESH cd case cake, i had to cut a chunk out of the cake because it wouldn't colonize... but, it's been dunked, rolled and is now in the F.C. i thought there would be a good water well there, but it wasn't a well... it was a hole all the way through the cake.. made the cake more like a... doughnut... lol well, i filled the doughnut w/ wet verm... well, just thought i'd update.. man this cake, er... doughnut is bad ass!!!

thats funny man cause the day i saw yer orig. post, i decided tried it too. but i only had a 100 cd container. long story short i birthed the other night, en chopped off the uncolonized chunk(now it is the size of a 50 stack). the well part is beat, but its in the pmp now, after a dunk en roll. ill let ye know how mine turns out. thanx for the cool idea

hey i'm glad the idea is working out for so many people! i think it's pretty damn cool, i havn't gotten any fruits off of one yet, but i'm sure it's as good as or better than a normal 1/2 pint cake.. well, that's my hypothosis. when i dunked mine it took a good bit of water in and looked awesome after it came out of the dunk. well, take care and keep me updated on your cake!

And now many years later, i bring this back up to see if anyone had any luck with this... I fruited the 2 cakes and yeilded a moderate amount of dry wt. No pictures of the old harvest in 05 but i will show some of recent harvests soon. I'm not sure who all is still coming around the website, but it would be cool to see if anyone had any luck back then off this idea.

ziploc brand plastic tupperware bowls work great with no dry verm layer and using micropore tape over one large hole. leave some room when filling it with brf and verm so you can shake them at 20 percent. i can get a fatass 750 ml brf cake fully colonized in around 2 weeks.

LC is the only way to fly. Use petri with agar to start from spore print,
then cut-up the agar and use it to innoc a bunch of LC. Cultures react
instantaneously to strong LC innoc; strong LC shows within 24 hrs of
innoc! Inject at multiple points with generous amount( a cc or more) at each point. You will become a true believer!
