Coprinus Comatus on Rye
    #3939492 - 03/19/05 12:40 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

This is about as far as I can get Shaggy Mane to colonize on rye, incubated at 75F. This mycelium isn't exactly vigorous. Anyone else get this result?

Just spawned this jar to manure/straw and was greeted with a pleasant blast of fresh mushroom. So that concludes it; apparently that's how Coprinus mycelium is supposed to look and mine is healthly so far.

Here is what mine looks like, on millet spawned to straw:

Haven't gotten it to fruit though.

Hey Pinback,

I've never heard of Coprinus fruiting on straw. Are you leaving it uncased? That could be one reason why it won't fruit for you. Also, what temp are you trying to fruit it at?

Thanks for the pic, always good to see other's results.

Oh, I have tried it on rye, spawned to straw and spawned to straw/horse dung, always cased. I have tried fruiting it at approximately 20-24 C (68-75 F) with and without cold shocks. Either the temperature, or that it might require a biologically active casing layer, is what I'm suspecting is the cause that it won't fruit.

Thanks for the links, it does fruit on straw after all. Maybe your temps are a bit high for fruiting? I'm aiming for 50-60.

I've got some C. comatus on my MYPA (Malt, Yeast, Peptone, Agar) plates and it is growing pretty slow. . . any comment as to whether my strain is weak or I should supplement my plates with something else?

Comatus requires a lower temperature than that to fruit. I'd re-attempt at around 60 deg F...

Edit: If I was a bit off it's because it's off the top of my head... I'd go by stamets to start, but remember to experiment! I think that stamets is an excellent informative author...but in some cases it looks like he was running out of material. eg, several identitical photos per book, as i discovered last night.

Good Luck with your grow! Do post picts if u have a digi cam.

You are probably right, although Stamets writes in GGMM that the primordia formation temperature range is 16-21 C (60-70 F) and the fruiting temperature range is 18-24 C (65-75 F). Unfortunately I can't really make a cool indoor environment for them.

How slow is slow? How long to colonize an entire standard petri plate?

So far mycelium appears weak and whispy overall, but it's definitely no slouch. Slower recovery time than cubensis mycelium, but it has some get up and go when it recovers. Basidiocarp how is yours coming along?

Things are going nicely here after spawning rye to manure/straw, but it took a LONG time to recover.

The mycelium of this species is pretty cottony and wispy most of the time. It can even looks a bit like cobweb mold on the surface of casings, I think. Despite this, I think it grows fairly quickly and should have a quick recovery time. Given enough time, it should form a strong, dense mycelial network.

Recovery time is a good marker of strain vigor and health, and so you may want to consider trying some different strains or going back to a younger culture of your current one.
