computer crapped out on me
    #3938102 - 03/19/05 12:43 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Just thought i would post here and see if anyone has any ideas on what went wrong. Anyhow, onto the problem.

Lately, my computers been having troubles. It started shutting down on my randomly, and lately it has been having trouble starting up in the morning.

I shut it off at night, and when i go to turn it on the next morning, it doesnt start up. All the LEDS come on, so its getting power, but it doesnt go through the startup process. It doesnt make any of the beeps or clicks that it usually does when it starts up, and just sits there doing nothing, with all the LEDs on.

I used to be able to turn it off and on 3 or 4 times, and it would catch and start up, but now it cant get it to start up all the way, it just sits there with LEDS on.

Anyone have any idea what piece of hardware is giving me troubles? i'm thinking its either the motherboard or the power supply, but i just dont know.

thanks

does the power supply make sound at all? the fan turn on?

if not it could possibly be the power supply, but you did say the leds came on, so i dunno.

it could also be your memory. If you have bad ram, the computer will usually not display a single thing.

if the ram is bad, he can remove it to see if the screen pops up. the screen will still light, it will just stop when time to count the ram.

can you get into the bios at all? if you dont get into anything, its probably either the cpu died or power supply. does the fan on the cpu turn when all the led lights are on?

Your BIOS may be corrupt, too. Try pulling the CMOS battery off the motherboard and wait about 10 minutes with the power cable removed as well. That should reset your BIOS, and if the computer boots up right away after that you should try getting a new battery as the one in there may be going out.

I cant get into the bios or anything, i turn it on, and the screen just stays black and says no signal.

i tried removing my ram, and starting it up, but it didnt help anything. it made a few clicks like it was starting up, but then it just stopped, and my screen still displays nothing.

The power supply appears to be working, the fan is going and LEDS are lighting up. is there anyway that the power supply is somehow "weaker" and now cant power the whole computer? i went with a smaller power supply than i should have in the first place, could that have anything to do with it?

i pulled out the cmos battery, and unplugged it for awhile, but that still didnt fix my problem.

also, i notice now that the fan on my video card doesnt appear to turn on.

and yes, the fan on the CPU is on when the LEDS are on.

think i should even bother with buying a video card or PSU to install and see if thats the problem?

Does the video card fan not spinning indicate a problem with the video card? i have a geforce 5600 256mb i think.

also, how hard is it to install a new CPU? think i could do it myself?
I've never done it before but i've got a decent knowledge of computers and parts.

installing a cpu is a breeze. but before you go out and buy one, have a shop test yours.
