knoxx gelatin as agar substitute
    #3937083 - 03/18/05 06:21 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I asked my Biology teacher where to get agar and he told me to use knoxx gelatin instead, and I was wondering if anyone else has used or heard of this method?

We tried it, it works kind of like agar, but the melting point is really low. It is also not very firm, stuff tends to go to the middle. In the old days, that is what they used. I get Telephone brand agar(use no cheap imitations!) at the local Asian grocery store. They have all kinds and forms of agar-agar, powder, sticks and others. Two bucks for enough to do one quart bottle of PDA. Gelatin with newspaper would probably work, which would firm it up a bit, or a little vermiculite mixed with potato water and dextrose and gelatin. My experiments with gelatin were not worth the trouble, growing mushrooms is tricky enough without adding variables.
