both methods are the same so long as you keep the temperature right.

edit: your not boiling the substrate. that would be too hot right?  :smirk:

I like to pasturize mine on the stove...in a large pot.

I can keep a better eye on it.

good idea, isn't it generally 170 deg.(f) for about 1 1/2 hours? then let drain overnight?

I use a big pot on the stove but only because my oven won't go that low

160 to 175 degrees.

30 to 40 minutes.

ring out the pillow case.

let it drain for a couple hours...or longer.

use when it has cooled down.

I squeeze out the excess water by hand.

you want the content to be moist...not overly wet.

Boiling is 212, that's too hot. Water pasteurization is quickest and most effective it seems. With the oven it seems to take longer to heat the core up (expect 3 hour wait).

PICTURE TELLS IT ALL.

Bag of bulk sub, hydrated to feild capacity FIRST, double rubber band BAG top (not so tight some streaM cannot escape)- SQUEEZE OUT THE AIR IN THE BAG (SO IT DOESNT FLOAT), SUBMERGE BAG, USE CANDY THERMOMETER TO MONITOR TEMP & GO FOR IT.

Just today I let some straw/poo drain, then threw three blankets in the washing machine, let them get wet, then started the spin cycle and tossed my pillowcase of pasteurized substrate in their opposite the blankets. Did a nice job of draining of excess moisture.

Personally.....I plan on both.

To hell with 5 runs for 5 bags  You can do a bag in one pot, another bag in another, and 2 or 3 in the oven all at once..

If I were to just do the bag...probably in water.

I hear to cook for 3 hours though, RK, you only do 30 minutes whenever you pasteurize? Do you always work with bulk and have good results like this?

estimated crop yield [Re: GnuBobo]
    #3939023 - 03/19/05 08:46 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I'm sure the answer to my question is somewhere because I read it at one time, never to be found again. So forgive me. What is the average crop expectancy per spore syringe using the Pf tek cakes method, then simple casing? 1 spore syringe w/ Argentinian strain, 5- 1/2 pint jars. How many grams should I yield (if all continues to go well)?
Any comments regarding Argentinian strain?

A single syringe can yeild an indefinate amount of mushrooms. How much on the first flush? Again, indefinate, depending on the route you go. I think what you basically want to know is 5 1/2 pint jars fruited as cakes, and as casings how well will they do? The spores have nothing to do with that.

5 1/2 pints, first grow I'd expect 1-3 grams per cake as cakes and cased, 2-5 grams per cake. Of course you could get anywhere from 0-14 grams per cake, cased or uncased..I've seen cakes range that much...

That looks like a PP bag. Does that work? I don't like pillow cases. Same pasteurization time (1 hr.)?
