Bad mycobag?
    #3936253 - 03/18/05 05:00 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

A friend made this mycobag and it seems to be doing... not so well. The first thing I noticed is that the bag was very bloated. I'm not sure if this is normal for mycobags or not, but 2 or 3 weeks after inoculation the bag filled up almost completely with air. It doesn't seem to be letting much (if any) air out of the filter patch. Will it explode? Also, it looks there are some problems with it, like disgusting brown sludge. Maybe you can help tell me whats wrong...

1. Is it contaminated?
2. Too much water content?
3. Overcooked?
4. All of the above?

This next picture is of a different mycobag that was made later. I think its overcooked. Let me know what you think if you can tell from this picture.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I want THAT air comming out. I just hope it doesn't explode into a messy contaminated mess. Can anyone give me any more input about either one of the bags?

The inflated bag is contaminated with bacteria which is producing gasses and the sludge. You can probably get a whiff of the problem by squeezing the bag and sniffing the filter patch. It can smell like anything (other than cooked grains) from apples to stinky feet, depending on the type of bacteria.

The other bag looks fine. Overcooking is rarely a problem even if the substrate looks very dark (which your bag doesn't).

Thanks workman. I don't think any air is getting out of the filter patch. It probably got wet from the high water/sludge content of the bag. I better throw that thing out before explodes into a gooey mess.

I was worried about the second bag since almost all of the kernels are broken and it looks pretty wet. I also noticed a very small green dot inside. It was too small to get a good picture of with my camera. I'll have to keep a close eye on it.

Humm looks like they were over simmered. usually they arnt supposed to be that dark , nor wet. Looks like busted kernals in the second one.. simmer less, lower water content. The second one could pull through, but low odds ide say. Just from my expiereince they dont fair too well lookin like that.

So the goal is to make the kernals not explode, and hold the water inside. Do you think the first bag was not pc`d for long enough?

Also workman I have a question for you, if you make the bag and add what you call sludge (which is just the kernals all mussy at the bottom of the pot at first) that is really bacteria infection? When I make a bag if I don't strain the stuff, I always get some of that slimy crap and I just say oh well and throw it in the bag and pc it.

When I pc I don't have a guage so I pc the bags at the highest I can before the bags would explode, trial and error. I see many others use pc's without a guage, i.e. the all americans. What is a good guage as to what 15psi sounds like coming out of a pc? Should it be squealing super loud, or is not that loud? The heat should be 3/4 to a 1/2 of the highest setting right?

The sludge you are adding as pulpy grains isn't bacteria infection. Sludge that appears after sterilization as bacteria liquidfy and digest your grains is contamination.

I can't help you with the cooker problem but I suggest you get one with a proper gauge. Guesswork isn't adequate for sterilization.

thank you workman for the clarification sir. I will be purchasing a all american 941 and stop guessing. So you use mycobags for your work, do you seal the bags after you sterilize or can it be done before?

You can get a special type of bag that allows presealing at mycobag.com. Otherwise the bags tend to burst if presealed. You will need to request the ones without the injection ports if you want to save money and don't need the ports. Presealable with injection ports are pretty expensive because installation of the ports requires some hand labor.

No, they look pretty much the same as the standard bag with a single filter patch.
