Casing questions: soak or let em go?
    #3935411 - 03/18/05 01:33 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I just harvested about 120g wet off of a small casing (6 inch diamter circle) which has had a hard life. It began life as 2 1 pint straight whole grain brown rice half cakes, was long negelected but produced small flushes, and after near total drying was nursed back to health, rehydrated and cased with straight verm. Now there are still about 20 healthy looking pins on the casing, with a few small fruiting bodies that haven't opened their veils. Should I wait for the pins, which seems to be almost like a second flush, or should I pick, soak, and shock, then fruit. Also, the casing has shrunk to about 2/3 of the original size. With no ill effects (and I think positive results) I've been watering down the sides where the casing has been pulled away a few mL every day. It absorbs all the water quickly. Any reason that I shouldn't be doing this? Thanks...

wait till most are open, then pick, dunk (if you want to) and fruit

cold shocking is unnecessary

let them go, after they are mature, clean all the pins and mature shrooms and then
dunk it, dunking it with the pins on it will ensure they abort
