Has anyone ever tried the substrate on the Hawks Eye web site. It consists of verm, bown rice, flax seed meal, bran flakes, and water. I don't have apressure cooker thats why I can't use bird seed. is this substrate better than just brown rice flour and verm?

Damn straight it is. But if its ur first time growing just use BRF and vermiculate and work ur way up from there. And I noticed u said u don't have a Pressure cooker, my advice to u is get one, u will thank urself a thousand times in the end.

Actually, I tend to disagree that the bird seed method isn't good for beginners. The only really tricky part is getting the moisture right. I do agree, though, that a pressure cooker is an absolute MUST for anyone who grows.

Not a "MUST", you can get by without one, but it will make your life easier and a little more worry-free if you have one.  Plus, you will be able to do more things then what you can do with a pot of water.
