Mostly the rising demand for oil, along with speculator greed. I don't think we've seen the worst of this yet....

There is no shortage of oil whatsoever. Oil whores like Bush and Dick want to charge you more to drive your car around to line their pockets, so they won't fund research for better fuels. OPEC is a load.

It's because of fear. Speculators or whoever is in the oil futures market hear bad news and buy buy buy, when that happens prices skyrocket, and we get the shit end of the stick.

Oil's a non-renewable resource(unless you wait billions of years for more plants to fossilize), and there's growing demand for it. Thus, prices will continue to rise until it becomes too unbearable to remain the status quo, and then the market will switch to a cheaper, more efficient fuel source(possibly hemp, as you suggest).

I am all for alt fuels, but I remain extremely skeptical that in our or our childrens lifetimes they will make a concerted effort to find a viable, natural safe efficient fuel source, especially Hemp. It just doesnt seem to fit in the bureaucratic mindset.

The bureaucratic mindset cannot make oil last forever. The world's oil reserves will get smaller, and prices will rise until it is no longer realistic to keep using oil.

Indeed. But until there is a reason to replace oil with something else, progress in those fields will be limited to relatively few environmentally minded R&D teams, which arnt worth shit in a can to the general population, hence there will be no real headway until necessity requires it.
