WBS QUESTION (archives didn't answer my question)
    #3931033 - 03/17/05 03:09 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I am a newbie but I have done my research (read/searched the archives for 5-7 hours a day non-stop for two weeks and have three folders 1/2 inch thick each on various tek's and tips). My concern is about moisture needs when using WBS. I have read that too much moisture will cause less than desirable fruiting. I am using a WBS/BRF/BR/VERM/WATER substrate in 1/2 pint jars, for fast colonization, PCed for 1 hour (they are cooling in the PC as we speak). I was planning on transfering them to small 8x8 trays and spreading them out. The trays would be transfered to the fruiting chamber which is 77F @ 90-100% RH. I want to know if I still need to case the trays with such high RH or if that would be too much moisture for optimum fruiting? All replys are more than welcome but I would especially like to hear from anyone who has tryed both ways. Thanks in advance.

Are you asking if WBS needs a casing layer to be fruited as is? The answer would be yes. Correct me if that's not the question that you're asking.

If you crumble them, they should be cased, preferably with coco coir.
But, if you're gonna leave it in a cake, it won't yeild as much.
Hope that helps.

Well sort of. I heard that too much moisture in the substrate can cause aborts and stalled fruiting. I also read that depending on thr RH, sometimes you shouldn't case when using perlite/hydro clay balls, due to excessive moisture. Have you heard of this?

I'm not going to be fruiting as cakes, thats for sure. I am either going to crumble them into a flat tray about 1 1/5 in deep and cover with suran wrap until recolonized or crumble into trays and case. I'm just worried about the casing making the substrate too moist.

Don't worry with the substrate being to wet if you follow a good tek to the tee. The importance with getting the casing material's moisture content is crucial, but easy as pie to get right. After you set up your trays with the seed, simply squeeze the water out of your casing material of choice with your hands until there's only a couple of drops of water comming out of it. This moisture content is called (field capacity).

I dont know where you heard that from? Thats silly. Dry will cause aborts and small fruits. Mushrooms like near saturation. As long as theres no puddles or standing water, you cant have to much moisture.

Now transpiration is a little different...once mushrooms start to grow (form pins and start maturing), they need to breathe a little so 85-90% humidity is best..they'll get bigger and meatier (water is pulled into the air from the substrate, through the mushrooms and trapped in the mushrooms..doesnt happen if theres already 99% humidity in the air as much). This is all really more advanced then you need to worry about with cubies, they fruit fine anywhere from 80-99% humidity with a casing (or less even). It will help you optimize, but if you cant drop humidity (add holes without polyfil or anything covering them, or fan more ect), its not gonna kill anything. Unless theyre sitting in fog...thats to much for mushrooms off anything, cake or casing.

This is for the incubation period only. When I switch to fruiting gear, I water the hell out of them. I want a lot of moisture to support a large flush. But don't over do it. Misting the casing heavily is good right before fruiting, almost right to the point of standing water in the casing. Just add water and let sit, and then add accordingly. This process may slow your work down a bit, but in the end you'll be glad you did it!

Thanks scatman, that pretty much answers my question. I'm going to case. One last question. My humidity is very high (95-100%) with very very little condensation in the walls. If I case an 8x8x1.5in deep tray w/colonized substrate 1in deep, how thick should the casing be if I'm using strait Verm? 1in?

i aint no scatman, as a rule the ysay 1/4th of the thickness of substrate. I would make it 0,5 - 0,75 inch. I think one inch is too thick for a substrate depth of 1,5".

No way, way to thick. Especially straight verm. Coir or peat moss in it, makes it easier to colonize and you can go thicker. Straight verm though I say 1/4"-1/2", 3/4" max, but 3/4" is what I'd use for a coir or peat based casing..

Not exactly. There is coco fiber, strandy thick hairs, you dont want this...and cococoir...more ground up, comes compressed in a brick (hydroponic stores or pet stores called Bed A Beast or Eco Earth sometimes or other such names), and can have some strands in it...but its more of a dirt consistency.

The white stuff is crushed oyster shell (long term pH buffer to counter acid secretions from mycelium) before you ask
