Temptation
    #3930914 - 03/17/05 02:40 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Temptation is the root of ALL evil. It is also the hardest spiritual roadblock (IMO) to overcome.

I recently beat my anger demon, and realized that my next obstacle is TEMPTATION.

Most of the problems in my life now stem from my inability to walk away from things that I love to do. (smoke pot, surf net for porn, check out women....their are several  :smirk: )

I have been trying to beat the demon by trying to stop doing the things I love the most (mainly pot) and haven't been having much luck. So I decided to try with something a little easier.

Today I was at my Dr's office waiting for some paperwork. I was just standing by the front window waiting when I see a woman leaving the office. She had to walk right by me. This woman was SMOKING HOT :whoa: and my natural response was to "check her out" as she walked by. I told my self that this was just another temptation and I should not look at her. (easier said than done BTW)

She walks by and goes out the front door and I just watch the TV.

That wasn't too hard I tell myself. Then guess what.....she comes right back in the door up to the window that I'm standing by.

Boy this just got lots harder

I could see her out of the corner of my eye. I wanted to get a look at how nice her ass was, but I continued to keep my eye off of her.

I never knew how hard that simple task would be.

The nurse that I was waiting for finally showed up and I talked to her for a minute and went to leave and the cute lil hottie was still standing their chatting away. I still never looked directly at her, just walked by her and out the door.

When I got outside I had a strange chill/rush that  ran thru my body. I had never felt that before. Kinda like I just accomplished something big. Could that have been it?

Did I beat the demon that easily?

I don't think so.

I'm sure their will be other temptations I just think they will be easier to resist next time.

there is no separate demon to beat
the attraction is hardwired
instinctive.
you probably want to be able to transcend your instinct in order to manage your life better, but it is not evil, it is nature.
our lives are possible because of it - our lives are richer because we cultivate beauty which derives from it.
like tending a garden.
some times we have to prune, and sometimes we have to let it grow.
seeing it this way is better than imagining demons.

Better for you maybe. You could see the bad habits as weeds that need to be uprooted.

It is easier for me to see them as spiritual demons that have to be defeated.

As long as you can see the bad parts of yourself....and take measures to fix them......does it matter how we/I go about tackling the problem?

As long as it works what difference does it make?

Just accept the first and best thing that falls in your lap.

Then, magically, your life will be guided by acceptance and principle, rather than resistance and giving in.

*or*

Just forget about the whole temptation deal, its your own ass anyway - just sniff it and go about your day - it wont make any difference - I swear.

Why do people have the general idea that resistance is so god damned good, anyway?

I resist to believe that notion. Now sod off!

If resistance to a temptation if motivated by a good reason... then go for it, like not doing drugs and resisting them to get a job.

However if it's imposed to make you seem like a better person or something to that degree... don't do it, you're a better person by giving into what you want provided it isn't harmful to ya.

If even Christ had to battle temptation, I don't think there's much hope we will ever see it in the rearview mirror.

I would shoot for a more specific target.

Everyone has to deal with temptation every day.

Not giving in to it is the trick.

What about temptation to do good or help other people? You're excluding one half of the whole picture.

If you can't get a job while on drugs you might as well go kill yourself.

Even doing good to others, when taken to extremes, is a bad thing. If you give and give and give to the point that your not focusing on your life, your just trying to please people all the time.

You have a problem.

Being tempted by something is not a bad thing.

Giving in to temptation every time is the problem. Then it has control over your actions, not you.

Like my anger demon. EVERY single time I would get mad/angry my mouth would override my brain and cause me problems.

I still get mad. I just dint let the anger control me any more.

My approach to it has changed.

This whole problem would be solved if one weren't to think through faulty concepts such as "tempation" (which is produced as a result of holding standards for actions, judging each action and playing a mental game of reward and punishment, using emotions to do so, etc.).

Forming a list of "good" and "bad" actions produces a problem. What was once simply an action occuring is now a mental interplay between the experience of the action, an identity that analyzes that action and judges it agansit a list of emotion-backed demands (that is, one thought demands that a certain action is taken and offers an emotional reward if the action is taken, or perhaps a jolt of a negative emotion if the demand is not met).

One's focus and awareness is lost in a mental/emotional game that doesn't really contribute anything to one's experience of life or one's effective decision-making process. If one were to take a more open mind to observing one's experiences, not being so quick to judge them and invoke emotions in an effort to control us, and then thoughtfully consider the ramifications and consequences of taking a certain action, one will be in a more capable mental state to act effectively.

I wouldn't recommend judging oneself or ones actions in such a manner, labeling actions and then attempting to control oneself with emotional rewards or punishments. Free up your mind so that you will be able to have the focus and the awareness, not to mention the access to a deeper understanding, to make decisions more effectively, to take the actions most preferential to one's own life.
