CU Student Leaders Approve Pro-Marijuana Referendum
March 17, 2005
news4colorado.com

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Student leaders at the University of Colorado have approved a referendum asking school officials to acknowledge that marijuana is a safe alternative to alcohol.

Supporters say they want university leaders to at least understand that the drug causes fewer problems on campus than drinking.

Freshman Vanessa Cisneros says she's getting a lot of support for her proposal. She says many people die each year from alcohol -- not from marijuana.

If the proposal gets on the April ballot and is approved, the university will not be required to change its policies.

Bob Maust is the university's alcohol-education coordinator. He says there isn't "political will" to bring about that kind of change.

The punishments are about the same for underage drinkers and students caught smoking marijuana. Most spend a semester on probation, attend a drug and alcohol program and perform community service.

I thought you were denied fed financial aid indefinitely if you had drug convictions?

Nevermind, googled it:

By law, some students who have drug-related convictions under any federal or state law may be ineligible for federal student aid.
According to the law, if you are convicted of a drug-related offense you may fact these restrictions:

For possession of illegal drugs, you are ineligible from the date of conviction (not arrest) for:

1 year for a first offense

2 years for a second offense

Indefinitely for a third offense

For sale of illegal drugs, you are ineligible from the date of conviction (not arrest) for:

2 years for a first offense

Indefinitely for a second offense

At some point they were trying to apply this to convictions which occurred before the law was even enacted. I hope they dont still think they can do that, that would be/is illegal as a mother fucker.

When God tells the neo-con's what to do, I don't think they worry too much about the legality of their actions.
