bulk growing / casing layer question
    #3929780 - 03/17/05 11:37 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hello. Thanks for all the great info on the board. I have tried to follow everything you all have advised and have had amazing results. Well. . . up to now anyway and I can't find the specific answer anywhere to my question. Here goes... I began with the popcorn technique which worked amazingly well, turned those initial 10 jars into 4o jars, no problem. Everything worked great. Used the bulk straw technique in 10 large clear plastic containers, no problem. Everything blossomed great, straw was covered in no time with a dense layer, just like clockwork. Went ahead and placed about 1/2 to 1" vermiculite layer, not too wet, not too dry. It has been two weeks and I can just barely see some white formation. Too slow in my opinion compared to the process up to this point. I want to expose everything to light to get things going. Can I just go ahead and do this now? (Oh, yes, pins were forming in the jars before I removed them, no black heads but definitely pin formation.)

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to bring you up to date. Thanks. Neolani

The verm probably wasnt near moist enough when you applied it. Thats probably what took so long. Should be soaked FULLY (add warm water or nuke while soaking for full expansion) then strained until it stops dripping...quite wet..

But yeah...fruit that bitch. :smirk:

better yet nuke it extra wet, the heat will make it absorb more water. then when you go to case it, just give it alil squeeze to get the excess water out of there.

I believe thats what I meant when I said "nuke while soaking" the verm.

I would then just drain, load into a PC and PC 10 quarts, to use some now and some later...you could however just sterilize in the microwave and apply it right then I suppose, I dont trust the nuke for sterilizing though. I just like to be extra carful..I've found (since I do large amounts) it saves time in the end.. Plus squeezing verm doesnt sound like the best thing to do to it.

big amounts maybe better of in the PC even though in an hour one can sterilze a lot of verm in the MW.

I buy my verm straight from the production plant it comes rather sterile. Its more because of the peat that I sterilize it...

Something I wonder: None of my plants with peat/potting soil ever have contams or molds on the surface...

My guess...trich hates like a ph about 5-6...peat soil stuff usually has a buffer added to make it 6-7 and plants dont secrete acidic wastes (or have acidic substrates) added to them. Also the humidity and water level isnt kept the same, and fresh air is probably a little more abundant, no balloons of gases sinking and forming pockets places, doesnt allow anything to become stagnent.

Molds/contams CAN be a problem for plants...just usually isnt. Anyone who grows MJ can tell you though, they can get molds/fungi growing in the soil too..not always just on the plant.

BTW, verm and casing mixes (non nutrious things) only need 30 minutes in the PC...I used to do 1 hr myself until I was informed this by a pro, cut my time down and havnt had a problem still, months later.

Yeah I relaized after posting, the half an hour of PC-ing casing mix.

And indeed the soils PH of my plants is not buffered and also it is less humid RH about 30-40, air exchange is huge as they are standing in the house, big space.

I had green mold once in a bulk tub and I have the idea it came from the straw. And I actually pc-ed the casing mix in an ovenbag.
Also I did not pasteurize that straw too well, since also some kind of grasses where growing! (wheat? )

Actually thats my main contam, trichoderma. Had it in several (2 or 3) grainjars, and on a cake "back in the days  "...
One cobweb, my first ghetto casing with corkbark and no holes in the covering foil, and muchhhhhhh to wet. Also 1 wetspot. And thats it.

Hmz but I must confess, PC has proven for me to sterilize. MW, it has too but maybe I was just lucky!

Straw will have grasses growing even when pasteurized...I get them in just about every straw casing in fact. Sometimes molds just happen, but I've found when you dont have them, you dont get them, and when you get them, you keep them. If you can get rid of it quickly once it pops up, you can remain safe...the absense of mold spores is key though. I think it also has to do with individual locations having more mold spores around..

In all other strawcasings (6 in total) no grass growing. And the tub with green mold I tossed. It stood like 5 inch away from my PMP where my Orissa straw/poo CAKE is still flushing for gold!:D (after all side pins I decided to take it out of teh container since the 2nd flush)

I think strenght of a strain/casing also plays a role.

Also some minor B+ straw/poo casings still there without contams. Actually they are rescued from an infected strawbed (green mold, but before casing it, due to partly killed (overheated) spawn).

Also I think, in the non Hepa environments, spores are EVERYWHERE.
Funny bout them grasses though......... Maybe due to that one has pasterurizing, and pasteurizing.

I heared Stamets says pasteurize at 140 for 3 hours or something.
I can imagine that grasseed finds that easier to survive then a 2 hours 175F.

Anyway we will see, will be birthing some new Orissa and Eq on straw/poo in some days.

Time for my tired body to take some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Quite true! I run 2 HEPAs all the time in my house, one in front of each fruiting closet.

>I heared Stamets says pasteurize at 140 for 3 hours or something.

I only do straw for 1.5 hours...if you do it for 3 or 2, the grasses may not survive as well. I do it in hot water, not oven though.. so I've heard 2 or 3 hours isnt needed.

Past. every time different. Mostly 1 hour at about 175-180. When I have time I let it stand and cool. And that takes long time. Most cases I end up with my hot straw and mostly its still to wet so I get red hands from squeezing it..

About them spores, just put a pot with boiled macaroni somewhere in a room. After a few days all kind of fungi are battling for existence.

I think
- preparation is very important (clean when inoculating, cleaning casing containers etc)
- make good jars
- if bulk, make fast spawnruns
- etc etc

And buy hepa!

But that last thing I dont have, and I can live with a less then 10% contam ratio.

Now me must really go to bed, my eyelids hanging on me knees now!
