Coco/verm casing
    #3927744 - 03/16/05 08:21 PM (19 years, 7 days ago)

I've been using the peat/verm w/oyster and lime, but now I want COCO?VERM... but in the TEK I read, it doesn't mention oyster shell, why? Do I only use lime... I thought it was only for SHORT lived buffering.

In my experience COIR/VERM does not require any pH balancing/buffering.
Mix 50/50, wet to field capacity, sterilize by method of choice, cool, case.

And this is what it says by the wy
<You can also add some calcium carbonate (=crushed limestone) to this mixture(around 5% by volume) if you want to stabilize the pH of the casing mixture somewhat.

you CAN...Don't have to...It just ups the Ph a bit, but its really not necessary, that's just roadkill...being...roadkill :smirk:

Has anyone ever used oyster shell with a coco/verm casing?

Yes!~

you can add oyster shell to it.

for the record...I use 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir without anything else.
Anno added the buffer to my tek...which is fine.

adding oyster shell to the casing material will help with later flushes.

I only go for 2 to 3 flushes from a casing...personally.
Just my own personal hang up.

2 or 3 flushs is as far as I go now - too. Beginning, I used to nurse the puppies along - for all they were worth. But, time taught me, fresh new spawned sub cased outperforms, those that are about worn out 3 to 1.

yeah

I don't like milking a casing.

plus older casings are more prone to contams.

No no no!

You keep saying this but this is backwords! The tek says to add limeSTONE, which is the same thing as calcium carbonate and crushed oystershells. LIME meaning HYDRATED lime...is a shortterm buffer though (water soluable). You dont want to use this for your coir...at least not without a pH meter or you can burn your shrooms.

Use those oyster shells though! They'll help out...I bought some calc carb when I first began...ended up going with coir instead of peat but read the same tek...decided to use the calc carb anyways just cause I had it until I ran out (5 pound thing from whatever vendor here sells it)...I did and then stopped using it...wow does it hurt later flushes....even first flushes...I wont do coir without it again (or peat of course, but that goes without saying right?). I used powdered oyster shells these days though (much cheaper).

BTW, I only keep my casings for 3-4 flushes...it helps out all of them  And it only costs a few pennies for enough in a casing to work you out an extra 7-10 grams per quart in the course of its life..

All that said, you dont need it...I go for optimal if I can though....I'd definatly use it until you run out though, then stop using it and see if you care about the difference too.
