Iowa lawmakers OK restricting cold meds

DES MOINES, Iowa - Lawmakers Wednesday approved a measure placing new restrictions on access to pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in common cold medicine that's also used in the production of the highly addictive drug methamphetamine.

Gov. Tom Vilsack promised to sign the legislation, which he called "the strongest ... and smartest methamphetamine bill in the country."

Under the measure, retail stores would be able to sell each customer only a single package of liquid gel capsules or liquid medicine containing pseudoephedrine in dosages under 360 milligrams - about the amount contained in children's cold medicines. Those medicines must be kept under lock until sold.

All other medicines containing the chemical would be allowed to be sold only through a pharmacy.

The House last week approved a measure requiring all medicines containing the chemical be sold in pharmacies; a measure before the Senate was less restrictive and would have allowed retailers some opportunities to sell the drug.

Critics worried the pharmacy requirement would deny rural residents access to medicines.

The compromise splits the difference, putting new restrictions on the sales in retail outlets, including requiring customers to show identification and requiring stores to log who purchases medicine containing pseudoephedrine.

Iowa has among the highest number of illegal labs in the nation making meth because of the relatively easy access to the chemicals used in making meth, some lawmakers argue.

"We are going to have fewer meth labs, by more than half," predicted Democratic state Sen. Keith Kreiman.

The bill will take effect 60 days after Vilsack signs it.

At most stores around here they now have signs posted all over the counters where cold medicines are saying "Medicines containing pseudoephedrine are limited to 2 per customer".

Too bad most people that cook meth don't buy it, they steal it.

New Meth Law Forces All Pseudoephedrine Behind Counter

DES MOINES- Vilsack's signature means big changes for Iowans. When the new meth law takes effect, you need to be prepared. The new meth law takes effect in 60 days, and when it does, it won't be so easy to buy your cold medicine.

Today you can get a box of "Tylenol Cold" right off the shelf, but when this law goes into play, the only way you'll be able to get it is from a pharmacist. That law applies to any package of solid pills with pseudoephedrine- meth's key ingredient.

There are a few exceptions. Low dose liquid or liquid filled gel-caps can be bought at a grocery or convenience store, but no matter what it is or where you buy it, it must be locked up behind a counter. You will have to show ID and sign a log when you buy it.

You're also limited to how much medicine you can buy. You can only get one package per day, and in one month, you can only buy up to 75-hundred milligrams of pseudoephedrine. That's about ten boxes of 24 "Tylenol Cold" tablets each month.

So you'll still be able to get your cold or allergy medicine, you'll just have to jump through a few more hoops.

The law signed at the capitol Tuesday is the nation's strongest because you cannot get your hands on any pseudoephedrine without signing for it or showing ID. Oklahoma passed a similar law, that doesn't go as far, but it cut the number of meth labs in that state by half.

This law takes effect May 22.
