I haven't researched it much, I just know thats its difficult to grow but I was just wondering if anyone actually knew for a fact why morels are so hard to grow indoors and outdoors.

If we knew exactly what it was that made morels so hard to grow, they would cease to be hard to grow because we would know exactly what to provide for them. There are lots of theories ranging from possible mycorrhizal requirements to beneficial bacterial requirements to exacting environmental fluctuations and changes that are required to bring about sclerotia formation and/or fruiting... And of course, strain/species variation.

I would bet that the few people/companies that have worked out indoor production protocols couldn't tell you definitively WHY or HOW they work... They just DO. And so... Who knows... Always a good thesis project!

I got ideas. But nothing more then that. I am sure many of the mycologists got them. All I got to say is start making hypothesises and start testing, it might take you your whole life time.
