Alternative PF Formulas?
    #3927947 - 03/16/05 10:55 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Has anyone ever tried an alternative to BRF in PF cakes such as wheat flour, corn meal, etc? I have just inoculated 36 experimental jars and am going to see how the yields compare to the traditional BRF

What were your yields with white flour?. In my PF cakes I have thus far only used brown rice flour and averaged about 12 dry grams per cake when cased, but I am hoping to see more yield using corn meal and/or wheat flour as substitutes, as I have found that when used as bulk spawn, corn and wheat berries both seem to colonize quicker and produce more mass than long grain brown rice... this is of course just my experience. I am sure someone has tried alternate routes, and I would love to hear the results. I also want to try ground quinoa mixed with whatever flour I find to be more efficient. I have read quinoa contains tryptomine, or typtophan i can't recall which, but both are used in the formation of psilocybin.

Adv..? LOL

Not really :smirk:

I've tried noodles w/ verm....I've seen them used bythemselves and thought that i could just crush them up a bit and try it like that...they turned to mush and barely colonized lol...I think that myc. just gave up

I've read around a bit, blacklabrat(something like that) tried several differnt things...but he never posted back on how things went, but they all Did colonize...

AFOAF has a few rip offs on the PF cake thingy -

Cubies - Tried BRF, barely flour, rye flour, manure, straw, whole grain, cardboard, sawdust, you name it.

Pan Cyans - Manure, straw, whole grain flour, and whole grain / verm mixes...

Azures - Cardboard, manure, birch dust, birch chips, birch plugs, whole grain flour, and whole grain/ verm mixes...

Odd thing is, he hasnt had one successful tru BRF/Verm Pf cake...

IME - Mixing substrates balances the nutes, and AFOAF tries to us 1 part mixed grains to fresh flour -
Meaning -
Barley, Rye, and brown rice (1 to 1 ratios) ground to flour.

He just mixed up some manure/flour/grain/verm cakes, calls em poopie pies, will let you know how he does on this round.

BTW- Success was best had with mixed nutes...

Edit - Has anyone else noticed how thick the myc grows with barley or barley flour? Isnt just a couple of jars, all of them from mixed genetics across 3 vendors show the same excellent growth.

Anyone know why or experience the same?

I had thick growth on barley as well with cubes. The colonized substrate looked a lot like overlay, it began rhizo then just turned to puff, but still had a good yield. I have another question. I have just recently begun to use the PF formula as I began with an eager heart and decided to jump right into bulk, which luckily turned out great, i just hate going through the trouble of having straw and manure stored in my apartment when its easier to store PF ingredients. Anyway, i have had a problem, when casing cakes, with clusters when I want even pins... is there a method in casing the cakes which promotes an even pinset, such as crumbling or slicing the cakes. I left my first cakes whole, but the most recent cakes were crumbled but have not fruited yet. Any suggestions?

How exactly do you sterilize and inoculate a container like that?
