These ads by the quick reply are terrible.

They definitely need to go.

I don't know if it's just me, but they create a huge gap between the Subject textbox, and the main post textbox, which is kind of annoying.

I'm currently using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0
If that means anything to you.

Okay I think this should be fixed, please let me know.

I also disabled the display of banners for supporters.

Peace,

Yeah, it was disfiguring the page my the quick reply box.

I have no problems with the ads, just where they were placed and what they were doing to the page.

Just out of curiousity, are the ads revenue related?

Or are they things that might interest us mycophiles?

Well, ideally both. Google targets the ads based on the content of the threads they appear in. Hopefully this will result in ads being displayed which you'll find relevant. We do get paid for the ads but only when people click on them, so it's in our interest to make sure they appeal to our members.

I do not see ads anywhere, in Mozilla or IE. I do not ever see the sponser ads. Was there a way to turn ads off if you are a supporter?

Hi,

Earlier tonight I changed it so that ads don't display for supporters. This includes sponsor and Google banners on the main site and BB.

the only thing I would say is have the google ads display in whatever color scheme you have on. Right now I have the dark blue one, and it comes up in classic shroomery colors kinda sticks out like a sore thumb. Its not a big deal or anything just something to think about.

maybe make the viewing of the ads for supporters optional, like you did the gradients and supporter tags. just an idea.

I hope your getting payed for those ads bro!~

I don't like them.

They advertise for non Shroomery Vendors.
I won't name any names...but one of the companies that was advertised, made me wanna puke.

lolzz

I also hate seeing ads...period.

I find them to be tacky.

Reminds me of GeoCities...after they forced ads down peoples throats.

But I still love ya!~

I remember the last time the administration did this in October last year - http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Forum7&Number=3258824

The Shroomery has sponsors, The Shroomery has supporters, do you really still need those ugly and pseudo-related-to-the-site Google ads?

I changed the ads around a bit, hopefully they'll fit in better now with different color schemes.

ivi we don't 'need' these ads but we've put a lot of work into building a big site and we're just trying to capitalize on its popularity a bit. The Google banners don't generate a ton of income compared to other sources, but they're fairly unobtrusive and judging by the clickthroughs some users do find them relevant.

If you really find them offensive there's always the option of signing up as a supporter. And thanks for the suggestion guys I will make ads a toggleable setting for supporter accounts.

Peace,

-Y

Is the Shroomery really that hard up for funds that it has to disrespect the sponsors by running these ads? I wonder how relevant the sponsoring vendors feel about the clickthrough rate to non-sponsors, losing them revenue!
The shroomery has strict policy about posting non-sponsor links... I guess this only applies if there is no money in it for the admins!!!

Welcome to the Shroomery... pay us money if you don't want to see our Spam ads! Tacky!!!!

Re: Ads [Re: Shdwstr]

Shdwstr, I appreciate your looking out for the interests of our vendors, who are the lifeblood of this site. However, we have taken care to place the Google ads "under the fold" where they will not attract any attention away from existing banners. In addition, we can control which Google advertisers are able to show banners on this site and we always block companies which directly compete with any of our sponsors. I expect our sponsors will see virtually no impact on clicks or views, as was the case when we rolled out Google ads experimentally across the rest of the site. In fact I imagine their traffic will actually increase as we work to add features and functionality which draws in new members.

ivi you say that like it's a bad thing but it isn't. Maybe you took it the wrong way. I know first hand that all the admins do a ton of work on this site and ask very little in return. It is and has always been very much a labor of love. Google Ads bring in about $300/month in revenue. All that probably wouldn't go to the admins, but even if it did, I would hope you wouldn't begrudge us $50 of beer money for the work we do maintaining this site. If you genuinely feel the admins aren't earning their keep around here, I think you either don't realize all the work that goes on behind the scenes or else you are a communist.

Peace,

-Y
