Was watching the weather channel today, and we have some nasty weather coming our way. I was curious about lightning, I know it is good for plants and grass, but does it have any effect on fungi?
From what I remember when lightning strikes it takes nitrates out of the air and makes those nitrates availible for plants and grasses to consume? I don't really know anything about fungi, so I was wondering if it helped them grow? Do any of you see more growth after a good lightning storm? Im still planning on going friday or sat. depending how wet we get.

Almost all higher plants have mycorrhizal fungi associated with them. The fungi provide nutrients, especially nitrates and phosphates from the soil to the plants in return for sugars from photosynthesis. So lightning would probably be beneficial to the fungi, although you won't see any visible evidence of it until they fruit.

Happy mushrooming!

The Romans believed that mushrooms appeared at lightning strikes. We get the name Suillus from them, because that mushroom was for the hogs. Only royalty were allowed to eat Caesars Mushroom. It was often common that a roman aristocrat would trust his "slaves" with gold but not with the Caesars mushroom.
