unknown story question (nothing to do with women)

Back when I was in about grade 2 we had these "language arts" textbooks. It was a series of textbooks that went from I think grade 2 all the way to grade 5 or so. The special thing about these books is they all had a short story at the very end, and this story would continue on through all the books.
It was a kind of science fiction story that got progressively more complicated as you got older and went on to the more advanced text books. So whenever we finished a text the whole class would take turns reading sentences from those stories.
My memories are bit hazy (this was about 15 years ago) but I remember one story where there was a robot society that enslaved a group of humans. They controlled them with painful ultrasonic sounds. Then the group of adventurers (from earth) cam there, and since one of them was deaf was able to free the humans from the robots.
In another one the adventurers end up on a desert planet and meet some ape-like beings.
I never did get to read all those stories, but I would love to do it now. Problem is I don't know what the texts were called, what the story was or who wrote it. Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't think this is it, but is sounds vaguely like the Wrinkle in Time series... I haven't read any of those since I was like, 10 though, so I don't remember many details. Just that the books got more complicated as they went on, and that the characters travelled to different dimensions... I remember them being in a 2 dimensional universe in one of the stories.
*edit* Now that I reread your post, I'm pretty sure this isn't it. What I'm thinking of is a series of novels.

Thanks for the help, but I just read an excerpt and that wasn't it.
This is really a collection of short stories made specifically for the text.
I think the way the story starts is they are in a school, somehow a couple kids (one of them is mute) get warped to other planets. The one behind this is an ape-like being. Eventually they go to the ape home planet and it's just a big desert since the bad guy destroyed it a long time ago.
I don't remember much but I do remember in the second story there were robots on an alien planet that had enslaved human-like beings, and the mute girl is able to destroy the head robot since they control people with sound.

Man those books were falling apart 15 years ago, I doubt they have them anymore. I was thinking of going to an Education university library though, they probably have a lot of childrens texts, right?
