I am new to this and I made my substrate a few days ago, thinking that my spores would be here soon. They have not yet arrived, however, and I was going to check my substrate to see if it had dried out. I have not yet even sterilized the jars yet. But when i went to check, there appears to be a white substance growing all over the inside, keep in mind i have not sterilized nor innoculated the jars yet. Do I need to make new substrate or will this work if I sterilize them now?

Theoretically, 15 psi for 1hr should do the trick but keep in mind that whatever little beasties you have in your jars have been robbing the substrate of its nutritional value. I wouldn't waste my spores on it. Just my 2 cents

i wouldnt waste my spores on already contaminated substrate.. just spend a few $ and buy more.. you need to pressure cook if your gonna let them just sit around a few days.. i would be careful of early pressure cooking because all orders are gonna be delayed because of the soon to be WAR.....start over just to be safe....

The only thing is that it looks very very similar to mycelium. Is this bad?

save yourself a lot of grief and start over. the time and effort required to start over now is little compared to attempting to rescue substrate that is allready contamned and isn't even inocculated

tip #34 - A day or two after sending the payment for your spores, ready your jars. Including sterilization. When your spores arrive inspect the jars for contaimination. If by this time there is no contaimination you should be set. If the jars become contaiminated after innoc. Something other then your sterilization tek went wrong.
You approach the turnstiles and know that when you get there you have to give the man two dollars or he won't let you inside but when you get there everything goes wrong.

Hey lord, just to give ya the overview to avoid you missing the concepts by being caught up in the details and the advice. The point of sterilization is to kill any micro-organisms that are already in your substrate (or their spores). When you mix up the substrate, but don't sterilize, you are letting those other micro-organisms thrive. They are by deffinition contamination, unwanted micro organisms. It should therefore come as little surprise that they resemble mycelium. The contam in the jars (most likely cobweb mold or some weed fungus) is a somewhat similar microorganism to mycelium and therefore looks similar. This should be a perfect 1st lesson about sterile technique. Now you've seen the shit that you don't want to grow, but havn't had to lose a culture to it. Proper sterile technique should keep you from seeing similar shit in the future. Now you know contams are for real, and will attack you. They aren't just shit you read about. Start over and keep it sterile, peaces
