Ahead of all those I personally put:

Substrate nutrition and substrate moisture content

02 exchange, lighting, RH, all those come secondary in my opinion. They are important things to consider. But, you can have the greatest setup in the world, and if you are using a sub par substrate (nutrition + moisture) you're bound for small shrooms.

Most cake mushrooms are like 2-4 inches...pictures make them look bigger. Cakes are poor substrates..you need whole grain or bulk 1.5-2" or thicker if you want shroomies bigger then 3-4 inches.

Strain will also play a role. Amazons are always very very short for me...theyre fat as hell though with wide assed caps that are often bigger in diameter then the shrooms are tall. And Z's always look similar for the first flush..then the caps stay the same and tey get taller and bigger as flushes go.

I have tried on cakes though, they might be even smaller and more puny in that case....

I wouldnt really go by size of mushroom. Thats never going to be a constant. Yield is better to look at since you will end up with more shrooms if they're smaller then had they been bigger...over all yeild shouldnt suffer. If you got 2-5 grams per cake on average then you didnt do to bad...

Sometimes cakes perform well for some people. It has to do with how they made it, exact water content, nice and fluffy, nice strain, nice conditions...and they all fall together. Some people need to work at it a bit first though...or try a change of substrate...

1000 watt metal halides are too powerful

try a 15watt fluorescent, it's cheap to run and one of the more suitable sources

It was on all 24 hours? That certainly hurt you..

Once the mushrooms are growing they only need 2 hours of light every day or two...more darkness=slower growth=bigger/thicker mushrooms

My friend has a undetermined factor also. 4-6in poo/straw bulks tend to spit out a couple shitty 2-4 inchers for the first flush. Then next flush is always huge and great....

Thats why a cubie is a cubie. Not because all strains are the same, but because you cant tell a strain by its name. Amazons will vary so much from other Amazons...

See they were short (2-3 icnes)..there are always a number of them though (makes them one of my favorites)...

Even on straw I just harvested some, they were like 4 inches at tallest.

Short, tall, fat, skinny....I'll take them all as long as the magics there.

This one is a fat son of a bitch, but it's the only fruit I have on the entire cake so it evens out I suppose.

I'm really curious to see waht this thing is going to weigh when it finally matures. It's taking everything I have to not pick it off right now just so I can weigh it. Well, and then eat it.

First flush is generally the smaller shrooms, second flush gets bigger in weight and shrooms usually.
