ok i just boiled 7 pint jars of substrate, im gonna let them cool in the pots they were boiled in and im gonna inoculate tommorow which bring me to a qeustion about incubation...how much slower would it be to incubate the jars at 70-74 degrees as opposed to the reccomended 84-86 degree range since i dont have a submersible fish tank heater and the tupper ware

IMHO, not that much slower, mabe take 1-4 days longer to fully colonize.

I think an incubator is mostly for people living in colder climates, where room temp is 60 w/out heater on....

I tried growin 24 jars without an incubator and none of them finished colonizing. I wouldnt recommend doing that, but like Sko said it would probably work in warm climates, just slower.

A friend in a warm climate tells me that his jars took dern near a full four weeks to colonize, some longer. With an incubator, it took two to two and a half weeks, maybe a little less on the fastest jars.

I let all mine colonize at 75 degrees. Never had any one of them not colonize completely or contaminate while in the jar. And it takes roughly 3 weeks to colonize, but I usually let them go a little longer than that just to make sure the inside is clonized as well.

So, until I have problems, I won't use an incubator. I'm in no hurry to speed up nature.
