Quick WBS question.....
    #3922851 - 03/15/05 10:22 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Which TEK would you recommend, 6T or Doc's? Also, regardless of which TEK you use, could you do away with the inner metal lid and just use Tyvek and the ring, for better gas exchange. Thanks. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick  :mushroom2:

No comment on the teks, I've used both and had great results. WBS is an easy introduction to grains, it's really hard to screw things up by following either one of those. There is no better WBS tek, whatever works best for your situation through experimentation becomes your ideal tek.

About the filter lid, I like a simple 1/4" hole stuffed with Poly Fill in the lid. About as simple as it gets. Excellent air exchange with minimal H20 loss, and the lids can be reused over and over without resutffing the Poly Fill.

Don't discard the metal lid. If you use the ring and tyvek only, you run the risk of your grain drying. Drill a 5/8 inch hole in the lid and put that over the tyvek and fasten in place with the ring. Your jars will have plenty of air exchange.

Hey Diver, what's up? I used Doc's TEK with my first attempt at WBS. I did my jars with a 1/4"https://files.shroomery.org/files/05-11/094614855-Mytopia_024.jpg] Haven't had great success for some reason. Maybe you guy's can help me out. I tend to believe the jars may have been a little wet.Don't know if you can tell from the pic's. Colonization was creeping. Some one told me they thought they were a little wet to start, think it was Anno, so I decided to take them in the glovebox and remove metal lid and replace with just Tyvek. After a couple day's I have noticed quite a bit of growth.url=http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/05-11/094618553-Mytopia_027.jpg] The jar on the left didn't get the lid removed, the one on the right was. I'm thinking with the loss of some of the excess water, and good gas exchange, colonization improved. So yeah Dog, I can see why you wouldn't want just Tyvek, would dry out real quick. And thanks again for the advice on cutting down the sides of my casing container, people told me it was a good idea and I told them it was yours, then for some reason they told me maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Just kidding, lol. Thanks. I'm thinking maybe I didn't let the WBS drain well enough before PCing. We'll see what happens.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony :heart:Hippie Chick :mushroom2:

Hey Hippiechick, how's it going? Next time try straight Poly Fill in the hole, no Tyvek underneath. Your jars definitely look too wet from here. Did you give them a good drain before loading into jars?

I thought so, but I was doing enough for 16 quarts, so I'm thinking maybe the seed in the center of the drainer may have still been a little damp.Thanks.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony :heart:Hippie Chick :mushroom2:

Hmm that could be where you are going wrong then. Whether you have them covered or uncovered during the drain process, it makes a big difference to stir several times and distribute the evaporation/draining as much as you can. Real easy to load the jars at the wrong time during this stage and end up with incorrect moisture.

Stirring in the strainer w/ a spoon occasionally here, it's rye but you get the idea:

I had mine covered, but didn't stir. Someone should add that to the TEK, "Drain: Dump your WBS back into your strainer and allow this to set and drain for 20 minutes. You may want to cover it with the lid or foil to keep the top layer from drying out during this step." That's how the TEK reads, that's what I did. Thanks, won't do that tomorrow.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. :heart:Hippie Chick :mushroom2:
