    #3918974 - 03/15/05 01:58 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

hell ow guys , do u think this is possible : i have two cakes almost done but i want to make a bulk grow , so i was thinking make a casing with the 2 cakes then from the mushrooms grown , get the mushroom dice-ct the mushroom in half and take a piece of myc then transfer that to a pre-prepared jar of WBS would that little piece of myc from the grown mushroom inoculate the BS jar?

If you really want to make your cloned piece of tissue go further, simply add it to a Karo solution to grow out. It's much quicker and you''ll be able to knock up dozens of jars. Adding live tissue to a grain jar takes forever to colonize, giving molds and bacteria the upper hand.

Have you done live tissue to grain? I have a number of times and even shocking it by dipping the peice into 3% h202 for a few seconds (15-20) before pouring it into the grain, it will come back to life and be ready for a shake in 2 days (3 sometimes) and that will spread around the 5-15 partially colonized grains from the single peice of tissue. Then you should have myc coming from all over and done in 8-14 days. Thats not that long IMO.

Adding the peroxide will help with contams. For a quart jar, I pour out 10ml in a cup, throw the peice (or peices if you want even faster colonization of the jar) into the peroxide for 10-20 seconds, then dump the tissue and peroxide into the grain jar, seal and shake the hell out of it.

Then that single jar of grain can be used to inoculate a karo solution (one grain peice) and two dozen quart jars. So either way in 3-4 weeks you end up with a nice (still unused) culture and two dozen quarts of spawn from the same clone, which can still be used through another 2 generations of transfers before you even need to get into the karo solution.

I do stuff like this all the time and its how I've managed to grow non stop since I've started without ever making a spore syringe (and without buying new ones over and over again).

wow! thanks scat...you just got a whole new set of wheels turning!

I've been wanting to do something along these lines but have been held up by not finding the "perfect" fruit body to clone....

what are your criteria for selecting the fruit? is it a waste of time to do without a REALLY good fruit?

thanks

Mushroommark; just get the best looking one from a multispore grow. It would only be a waste if you considered growing your best shroom multiple times, and getting more even results a waste :P, give it a shot, it really is very easy.

There will never be the ""perfect" fruit body" and when that is found there will be an end to the mycelum strain. The mushroom is alwyas evlolving like the rest of the universe into a more perfect organism.

BUT you could in theory create a fruit body perfectly suited to your specific growing conditions (substrate, temp, rh, etc). It probably would lose some versatility but it could be worth it until the genetics start to break down.

...I think

just to be clear, I have 10 jars of brown rice colonizing
can I use some of one of the jars to knock up 10 more jars of rice or do I need to use the karo tek?

Thanks!

A 1/10 ratio works well, so in your case I'd suggest using one entire fully colonized jar to inoculate ten more via grain to grain transfer.

I know Roger is one of the more experienced here but I'll be suprised if he's successfully pulled off a colonized BRF to raw BRF xfer. In fact, other than suicidally trying just "to see if it could be done" I wouldn't really see the point. BRF is so incredibly starchy that open air practically guarantees contamination. Colonized BRF is another story. It's a great medium to inoculate larger grains (wbs, rye, etc) and substrates (straw, poo, even wood). The fact that it can be basically powdered inocculant makes it pretty versatile.

I digress, not only do I maintain that exposing fresh BRF to open air (even a glovebox) is bereft of any advantages over just knocking it up with karo but also that this thread direction is entirely un-advanced.

Robear's question was on using brown rice for grain to grain transfer.  If he's using pf jars with brown rice FLOUR and a vermiculite barrier instead of brown rice as stated, it would be hard to do a g2g.
RR

lol anno.  I'll bet you use the search feature to find all the 'knocking up' posts...admit it.

I have to throw up when I see this stupid phraze...

The one who used it first should be publically smeared with a spore sludge and feathered.

INOCULATE

All repeat after me: I N O C U L A T E

Or inject.

But NOT, I repeat N O T knock up......

the phrase is rather old in our circles.
