No pinning. Advice?
    #3915350 - 03/14/05 06:26 AM (19 years, 19 days ago)

I cased about two weeks ago, when the myc. hit the top, I gave a light patch and stuck them in the pmp. The myc. took over again, I am trying so hard to avoid overlay, I gave a light patch and put 'em back.
The myc. took over the surface again and it's not pinning at all after about a week straight after the last patch.
What's going on?

Whats the temp? 72 - 76F is a good fruiting temp, with lots of light (12/12), air exchange & high rh. That usualy induces pinning.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, everything is like text book so far. The myc. broke the surface all the way across real even.
G/E and temps are right, RH, a bit lower for casing @ 85-90%. I have tiny droplets of water within the myc. and I don't mist.
The myc is still sticking up like ropes on one, another is starting to have those white dots that may be pins. They are also beginning to pull away from the sides of the container.
Do I just need to be patient or am I heading for overlay?
Thanx

That casing may actually still be too dry especially if the substrates shrinking already. Myc thrive in a nearly saturated environment. Try misting that lightly patched casing to near saturation then throw it in the fridge for 12hrs this will slow myc growth and may be just want it needs as long as all your other parameters are met also try 16 hrs. of light . Once the myc pokes through again stop misting and let nature do it's thing. GL

Are you getting pinning on the sides?

O yeah, when I went to do as instructed, I noticed small carpophores and a high knot count. So, it is pinning from the sides, prolly the bottom too, but I'll wait awhile to check it.
What is going on here?
Any suggestions on what to do with it?

if i remember right pulling away from the sides is a sign of overlay not too burst ure bubble or anything, but u could try cold shocking the casing to slow down mycelium growth and initiate primordia formation

Hmmm, I'm just tryin' to figure this out.
I was careful not to cause overlay, but, slowing the myc. down is a key?
They've had the 10 degree drop, but not a cold shock.

no pulling away from the sides can also be just that water is disappearing from substrate, not overlay per se

but its 7 days fruiting now?

it can take longer.....

Yeah, well, more like about 10 days, I didn't mark it's actual B'day so...
But now I got pinning action comming up from the sides and none on top.
It's funny, cuz I really studied, and got a perfect even colonoization, but it didn't pin on top like it was supposed to, wonder why.?.
I'm really considering the "near saturation" point that Hyphae speaks of, I seem spray bottle shy. I don't want water sitting atop my casing. My RH is fine
I'll let it pin awhile to get a good start, and then flip it over to mature in about 4 days.

at the top it was to dry while at the sides it was more humid.

I had this with a bulk cake a week or so ago. at top, no pins, at sides, PINS! and at the bottom (it was standing on my geolite) the pins were largest, they where already mushrooms.

I think its due to RH factor, and MAYBE light.

Yeah, sounds about right  :smirk:
There are actual droplets on the sides of the containers, between the casing and plastic. The mushies seem to like it, I'm just so afraid to oversaturate it, I've worked so hard to get here and don't wanna loose now
Thanks for your input

I don't want you to lose it either, water delivery is a fine balance when it comes to mushrooms believe me. You want to use a very fine mist and mist gently and bring up the casings moisture content up through many fine misting bringing that moisture content up slowly and do it from a distance letting only the finest mist hit your casing surface. The one thing I will recommend is stop misting once the myc reaches the surface as this is the time when misting can harm developing pins easily if droplet size is to large or is done in excess or with force. The droplets on the inside of your container are simply condensation created from the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of your container and should not be used as an indicator of humidity. Yeah, I hear ya, I'll try that next time around.
I'm lookin at pics of fruiting casings and I see mushies comming from the casing material. It's like I didn't do something from stopping the myc from overtaking the surface.
That's really great info. about the casing moisture
Thanx
