Casing Questions?
    #3916631 - 03/14/05 04:20 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I decided to try doing two casings, try to get some experience before my WBS is ready. Each casing is two 1/2 pints of B+. This is what they looked like when I placed them in a friutung chamber after 3 days in the incubatorThis is what they looked like the next day.url=http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/05-10/066714008-Mytopia_004.jpg][/url]I patched the heavy white spots on this one, and placed back in fruiting chamber. This is what they look like today.  Is everything looking O.K.?, is there anything I need to do?I cut the containers down so CO2 wouldn't build up. Thanks for any input.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick  :mushroom2:

How does cutting down the chamber reduce CO2? You mean cutting down the size?

It looks like she has the folger's containers in a terrarium with perlite in it.  CO2 doesn't rise, it falls.  So by cutting the excess material off of the casings, the co2 can essentially "spill out" rather than sit on top of the casings... At least I think that was the idea, correct me if I'm wrong someone.... Lataz :stoned:

Put a 1/2" damp vermiculite on the bottom, about 1" substrate, then a 3/4" casing layer of 50/50+. Half verm., Half coco coir, and 10% hydrated lime by volume.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. :heart:Hippie Chick :mushroom2:

I've heard 70/30,60/40,and 50/50. Decided to try the 50/50 first. Why no buffer with coir, does it have something in it that will keep the acidity down as the casing matures?Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick  :mushroom2:  I just checked out the 60/40 TEK in the Shroomery, and it said you can add crushed limestone. I've got it, so I used it. Better safe than sorry.

Coir arrives with a neutral pH right out of the package and a buffer isn't necessary.

Hey Diver, the 60/40 TEK in the Shroomery grow guide says you can add crushed limestone, so I did. Thanks.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick  :mushroom2:

That's cool HippieChick. I thought you were asking why coir doesn't need a buffer, maybe I misread it. No harm done in you adding one though.

Good luck

I could understand it not needing one, since its a neutral ph, right off the start, but what about after the casing has been growing awhile. Doesn't the acidity go up from waste, thus allowing contams to start. Maybe crushed oyster shell would be better. Isn't that a longer term acidity control. Thanks Diver, and oh, do the casings look O.K. so far?Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. :heart:Hippie Chick :mushroom2:

yeah you can add some crushed limestone to the 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casing...but it isn't needed.

it does seem to help with the later flushes.
