after a lot of reading and pictures I'm ready to go picking! In the mountains where i hike i've seen many amanita farmosa growing.I'll be taking some pic. for IDing since this is my first shot at mushrooming but I can still see them in my mind from last year....but this year after lots of studying i'm sure these are the farmosa variety.Looking forward to sending in the pictures for ID.Any comments welcome.

I think you might mean Amanita muscaria var. formosa?

Keep in mind that many amanitas can look alike and can share a common habitat, some species in the genus are even deadly poisonous. I have done some hiking and mushroom hunting up in the mountains of PA. It is really a beautiful and fun place to spend time. Good luck and looking forward to your pics. The fruitings usually start in the early fall, here in the northeast.

Yeah, I've found such a wide variety of fly agarics in my area, I just admire them. They are beautiful, and fun to find
But it's not worth the risk for me to mess with them at all.

Make sure you dig up the entire base of the mushroom and get a photo that shows the base of the stem including the volva. Those are very important for accurate identification of these Amanitas.

Happy mushrooming!
