Cake Fell Apart

I have a bun ch of 1/2 pint jars with a nice and straight top (no shoulders) and they are easy to remove from the jars. But I hd some left over brf&verm mixture so I put it in a 1/8 pint jar but i didn't realize that the top was tapered. Long story short, after much struggling, I was forced to break apart the cake into 5 little pieces. So what I did was roll each of the individual peices in dry verm and placed them in my poor man's pod. did i fuck up here or will I maybe get shrooms from each of the little peices? I mean these things are pretty small since they are 5 peices from a 1/8 pint jar.

I'm a little confused about where your problem with the tapered jar arose. You say you use straight jars with no problem, you had a problem with the tapered one. Tapered jars, which sides are at a small angle, making the top, or mouth of the jar, slightly larger than the bottom, allow the cakes to slide out easier at birth, I would think you would have more problems with the striaght jars. Tapered jars are usually what you want to use. As far as for what will happen to your pieces, which you basically cased, I would think it possible to if not actually produce a full grown mushroom on them, don't see why it couldn't produce 1 or 2 small ones,I would think at least pin and abort. After all ,it is healthy mycellium, just in small scale.I, myself, think I would of broken it up into smaller pieces, like marbles, anywhere from 1/4" to 3/8" in diameter, and cased it in a 8oz. Solo plastic drinking cup. Put a 1/2" layer of damp vermiculite in the bottom of the cup, then your broken up substrate(PF cake), then a 1/2" to 3/4" layer of 50/50+ casing mix.( 1/2part coco coir,1/2 part vermiculite,10% hydrated lime, make sure the lime is low in Magnesium, less than 2%.You can also add crushed oyster shell to this mix,if you plan to use it in your future larger scale casings, about 15% by volume). You would learn about casing this way, how to care for them, what to look for, overlay, and all that other fun stuff involved with casings.(I'm doing it right now with two 1/2pint jar each, casings. Getting ready for when the WBS is ready). This probably would have had a better chance,I believe, in producing some mushrooms. But please keep me ,and everybody, posted as to your results, I'm actually quite interested. Good Luck.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

You've got it backwards.Shoulders=Tapered, The Opening is smaller than the bottom, Therefore making it hard to get them out.
And yeam you could have cased, but they might develop something..Well, they should, just take care of em' Gl

I'm still confused, I took the following from one of the TEK guides here at the Shroomery,"They must be ? pint size and they must be tapered (sides of the jar slant outward so that the top is widest part of the jar) so that the substrate cakes can easily drop out of the jar. These can be found in grocery stores, hardware stores, and drug stores, and cost about $7.00 for a box of 12 jars". And the other one's I just checked out also said to use tapered jars. Mine are tapered, and the top is larger then the bottom, and there is no shoulder. Cakes fall right out when I turn them over. Maybe there is some type of tapered jar I'm not using. Doesn't sound like I would what to. Sorry . Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

ok listen i said the wrong word. i tried to describe it by saying it was hard to pop out but i should have said the opening was smaller. but whatever, the whole thing is that i couldnt get it out and it broke apart. i dont want to do any casing with it. i just wanted to try and treat it like a normal cake, except on a smaller scale. so these aborts will still be alright to eat or what?

Yes. Aborts are good to eat as long as you pick them soon enough. Before they start to rot. I've enjoyed the ones I've studied. Good Luck. Let me know what happens, sounds like a fun little project, mini-mushrooms.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

you could put all the peices back together...it will mend itself back together.
I did it with one...for an experiment one time.

Cool. Was just wondering about that. When I was removing some from a dunk, I broke about an inch off the bottom of one, and just stuck it in the fruiting chamber, one piece on top of the other. Have to see if it mends. Thanks Road.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony Hippie Chick

hey roadkill, I was wondering if you could put 2, 1/2 pint cakes on top of eachother to save space for taller but narrower fruiting chabers? Would the 2 cakes turn into one and fruit properly? Would you have to do this before dunking and cold shocking or after?

Jars where the top is larger than the bottom with no shoulder are labeled as 'wide mouth'. Jars where the top is smaller than the bottom and there is a noticeable shoulder are just plain jars. They are not labeled as 'tapered' on the package. However, quart jars and above have a shoulder whether the package says wide mouth or not. Wide mouth quarts just have quite a bit smaller shoulder. This is the for the Ball and Kerr jars that I use. Aborts are fine to eat and are potentially very strong. You could dunk and roll the little pieces and put a couple in a lid with moist verm, I imagine it would produce a few. Good luck.

Exactly. And if you look at the box, it says tapered. Be it widemouth, or tall like these, they need to be tapered. The tapering of the glass is what makes the top of the glass larger. I don't know of any jars tapered so the top is smaller. I'm sure thats what the TEKs mean when they say to use a tapered jar.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony Hippie Chick
