Exactly,This is a common missunderstanding here at the boards on how muixh the casing should be colonized before initiating pinning - NOT AT ALL ! !
As you said, the casing surface shouldn?t colonize, only the inside of the casing should be permeated by the mycelium for casing still serve as a water absorbing and water providing layer.

keep in mind I don't know much about casings but I think you should patch and put it in the chamber. ( sorry if I'm wrong. )

A very light patching and initiating fruiting at this point should be just fine as long as substrate is level and the casing layer's thickness is even. GO FOR IT!!! Read this :wink:Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy.
People have in general bad timing when it comes to initiating pinning in otherwords they don't take into account the transitional period between vegetative and generative growth. This is cut and dry there should be no debating such a simple issue it should simply be understood. GL
