It's different for every kind of drug, and different in different states sometimes.
LSD can bring a charge of attempted manslaughter.(Just editing to say this is probably an urban legend or something that I never got out of my system. sorry.)

You can search erowid.org for this...just click on the drug you're interested in, and click on "LAWS"

my friend got busted with a Sweetbreath vial containing LSD about 5 years ago. they charged him with manufacture of a controlled substance and he received 9 months in jail, 10 years probation, 1000 hours of community service, and he was required to talk to a class in high school about the "dangers" of LSD. this happened in Texas, so im sure he could have gotten more or less time depending on which state he was busted in.

I had a friend get busted in Indiana (96') with 18 hits of blotter and he got 18 months in IDOC (Indiana Department of Corrections...AKA prison). A year per hit seemed VERY over the top but with mandatory minimums I guess he got off easy??
He serverd ~9 months. In Indiana they have 2 for 1.
Edit: there was also a guy I went to highschool with who was busted with an ungodly amount of blotter who got 20 years in prison when he was 21. He was in my class so he should be up for parole in about 3 years.

Just did a IDOC search and here he is:
****** ************* DOC Number ****** First Name ****** Middle Name Last Name ************* Date of Birth **/**/1976 Gender Male Race White Facility/Location Miami Correctional Level 3 Facility Earliest Possible Release Date **/**/2007 Sentence Information Date of Sentence **/**/1999 Description CONSPIRACY/DLNG A SCHED I,II OR III CONT SUB Term in Years / Months / Days 20 00 00000 Type of Conviction FA Indiana Citation Code **-**-*-* Cause Number *****-****-**-*** County of Conviction BOONE Projected Release Date **/**/2007 Sentence Information Date of Sentence **/**/1999 Description CONSPIRACY/DLNG A SCHED I,II OR III CONT SUB Term in Years / Months / Days 20 00 00000 Type of Conviction FA Indiana Citation Code **-**-*-* Cause Number *****-****-**-*** County of Conviction BOONE Projected Release Date **/**/2007
I guess I was wrong about the amount of time he must serve but its still close and more importantly so damn sad he has to be confined for no good reason for such a signifigant portion of his life to begin with.
Its a damn shame too, he was a stand up guy. I knew various police around that community personally and he outshined all of them.
