"Made in China"

When I buy something that says "Made in China", what should I visualize in my head when I try to imagine where this thing came from?
Was the worker a slave to the Chinese government? Were they required by law to work in this factory?
Could they quit working there and work somewhere else, or quit working at all if somehow they could afford it?
Are they free to work any job that they (and their employer) feel they are capable of doing?

visualize a little slanty eyed yellow man with a triangle hat hunched over a conveyor belt and getting whipped by a spiked chain attached to a centrifuge that whirls around and whips all the slaves

They are technically free to work, but there is no social security whatsoever, wages are shit, so they have no choice really. That is the price of Chinas explosive economic growth, really shitty working conditions. It is quite similar to America in the late 20th century. Soon enough I think the workers will form trade unions to represent their rights, I am predicting that this will start happening in about a decade. Because right now China is at the initial stages to becoming an economic superpower, the economic growth will put extreme pressure on society, but eventually society will fight back, possibly even leading to democracy, who knows? I am going to be watching China very closesly in the next 10 years, 'cause it is changing so rapidly, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

What isn't made in China these days?
All those tiny hands and all that amazing technology churning out - it wasn't too long ago that only plastic crap for xmas crackers came out of China.
Must be wierd making all those 3.5Gig laptops etc all day and then you go home and get your cardboard cutout version to offer to the gods.

They supposedly have a larger middle class than america, given the fact that they have a larger populous to begin with... still.
I too think of the same things. But it seems a little more dismal when things come from the phillipines and malasia, etc. There's a lot worse conditions out in places like that. I try to buy my clothes conciously.

Just wait until China floats their currency freely. Their export market may well collapse. Right now the Chinese government artificially pegs it to the dollar. It is basically a tax on their own people so that we can all have cheap stuff. Enjoy it while it lasts. I have no idea why any government would think that is a good policy.
When the shit hits the fan in China it will be big. And it is a matter of when and not if. They have problems out the wazoo. Their aging demographics are worse than the US and even old Europe because of their one child policy. They call it the 4-2-1 syndrome, where one child is forced by circumstance to take care of two parents and four grandparents. China doesn't have much in the way of social security.
They are headed for a demographic disaster.

By keeping their money cheap, they keep their products cheap. By keeping their products cheap, they sell a lot of stuff. If their stuff was more expensive, they would not sell a lot of stuff and therefore they wouldn't make as much money. By selling a lot of stuff, they also have built up a powerful manufacturing base.

I am not saying that their policy doesn't have benefits, but it also has drawbacks. Right now people in Mexico can't compete with the low cost of Chinese labor. Why? Because China artificially devalues their own currency.
Would you want to be a Chinese worker making less than anyone else in the world. That system will not be able to last for eternity. When market forces push them to float their currency in real markets they have all the makings of an economic collapse.
China is going to be in a world of hurt. It is not a question of if but when. Mark my words, I am the Son of God.

Blasphemer. If you truly want to (pretend to) be the son of God you need to start your own religion.

I own thousands of shares of stocks in many of these corporations. You are all my slaves. Soon I'll be making so much money I won't have to work for any one else anymore. My business will be sitting around and collecting dividends from my investments.
