Need help with my casing layer
    #3908555 - 03/12/05 07:59 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi everyone, some of you know me. Right now I'm incubating 8 1/2 pint PF-Tek jars. It's been less than 2 weeks and there 70-80% done. Strain: PES amaz.

Right now I'm getting little crazy on my casing layer. I don't know what to do. I want to use just verm. for my double end casing layer. Is Verm. for a casing layer good, great, execellent, shitty? Just using Verm.

Thanks,
Cray
:peace:

Hey Cray

Are you crumble + casing them, or just fruiting as cakes? I ask this because you mentioned to "double end casing" which is a cake reference.

Verm works fine, I've had and seen good results with a plain old verm layer top and bottom. Make sure you have a moist bottom layer in that case, always helps for extra moisture to your casings.

If you're uncomfortable about mixed casings (50/50) just go straight verm. If you have the peat moss and want to try 50/50, by all means do it. Straight verm is less likely to support contams (mainly cobweb) so it has an advantage there.

Whatever you decide to use, shoot for a 1/4" top layer. Less time to wait for the casing layer to colonize, and I've never personally seen an advantage to having a thicker casing layer. Who wants to wait a week for your mycelium to colonize an inch of casing? yuck.

Alright, so spray down the top and bottom layer? Should I use dullited water with h2o2?

Also, I'm reading about faning and spraying/misting. When do you start faning/misting? Once you start the casing? How often do you fan and mist? And for long long when fanning. Heard couple people just use the lid of there incubator and wave it around. Fan ok? Thing is lent of the fan.

Thanks for the advice!! :-D

You mist later on yes, but you don't just spray your casing layer to get the initial moisture content right. That is done seperately in a mixing bowl, with materials + water.

Check out the casing archives, it will explain alot to you:

K, I'll be checking it out some. Couple of quick question hoping you can answer, should I use perlite for my casing, I'm reading a lot and they say now to. Thing is hoping my humitity will stay 70-80 (hoping thats where it's suppose to be).
