The plants will increase in diameter over time, but the thin areas will not increase in diameter faster than the thick areas.

Etoliated areas are vulnerable to breaking.

You need to gradually increase light levels. For example, start off in a shaded area and gradually move to less shaded areas. Alternatively, take your plants outside for a few minutes more each day until they are used to staying outside.

as for one of the reasons why they are thin... i need to ask, did they get watered during winteR? watering in winter can do this to the pedros. because normally in winter, there is no rain where they live, so it makes them very goofy and thin. i learned this from a web site that my cactus vendor gave me. cant remember the url, but do a search and you will find it.

Almost by definition, etoliation is caused by too much moisture and too little sun. If you can provide summerlike sun in the winter and sufficiently high temperatures, you can water all you want.

When given water, cacti will try to grow. If there isn't enough sun, etoliation will occur. If it's too cold, rot is a risk.

You will not have success growing cacti without sufficient light, either outdoors, next to window with lots of light, or under artificial lights.
