i am from happy land, but they sent me to rageville.

i had to spend about an hour registering an account with them to place an order yesterday.

they called back today and asked a bunch more questions today. they asked why i want to culture plant tissue, what type of plant's tissue i'm culturing, what i'm going to do with the plants once i'm done, etc. basically, a bunch of questions that are none of their business, but i answered them anyway.

after we went through all that, the lady said "well, i'm sorry but we can't send you item #xxxx" which was agar, enriched with sucrose and vitamins, "because it is hazardous. would you like us to go ahead and ship item #xxxx today?" the second item was indoleacetic acid.

this makes no sense. they will ship me a concentrated acid, but not agar + vitamins.

the agar media didn't have hormones in it? Plant hormones are a tricky business to deal in when shipping to domestic residences and non-licensed people.

i don't know what are considered hormones and what aren't.
the agar had sucrose and a basal salt mixture added to it.

i did start a nursery business and have been planting thousands of seeds.

i'm getting mutant shapes and colors here and there and that is what i wanted to culture. that is also what i told them, but since i am not in the laboratory business, they won't let me order the products...even though my personal lab is better equipped than the local college's lab.

Then i say you should if you will be doing lots of work on this subject by buying raw materials and mixing your own... or will they not supply all the minerals.

they won't sell me what i need seperately either.
i'm sure there is some company out there that will.
it's not like i'm buying anything i can make a bomb with or snort up my nose.
i don't see what the big deal is.

i'm just going to place orders at all the lab supply places i find, one by one, until i find one who will ship the stuff.

YOU'RE GROWING ANTHRAXX AREN'T YOU, YOU TERRORIST!!!
I'M CALLING HOMELAND SECURITY!!!

Seriously, though.  They'll give anyone a tough time for anything that even SEEMS like it could be used for illegal purposes.  Gotta get that security clearance or your outta luck.  Anyways, if they won't sell it to you, make your own or send your business elsewhere.  Ingenuity is the key to entrepreneurship, and good luck with your endeavors.

The government has everyone scared to death with the patriot act and all that. Now a lot of places won't even send you table salt unless you are a researcher or something. It's all bullshit but what can you do? There are places out there that will sell to you but you have to find them.

Sigma's always been strict so i'm not surprised. The stuff you listed aren't hormones so i'm surprised that they were that strict about it. You could easily just order bulk agar and add get vitamins and salts/sucrose elsewhere. But plant hormones in clude the IAAs and the Gibberellins etc..

i may do that later. i don't want to order much at this time. i want just enough for a few trial runs to see how things go.

i placed an order with caisson labs and it looks like they are going to ship it. the only problem is that they don't have indoleacetic acid, so i'll have to find it elsewhere. sigma had it and that is the only item they would ship, but i'd rather take my business elsewhere.

That's just weird, they'll ship the IAA but not agar fortified with sugars and vitamins that you could easily do yourself? They've always been weird but i didn't think this weird.

In case you didn't know... the broadleaf herbicide 2,4-D works because it acts as a super effective IAA analog, which leads to plants literally growing themselves to death. Hence, you can often substitute 2,4-D for IAA in tissue culture methods. So, if you can't find a source for IAA other than Sigma, you can try experimenting with 2,4-D based herbicides that are readily available in any gardening center.

Now, 2,4-D doesn't work as well as IAA for certain applications in tissue culture for certain plants.... you will probably have to toy around with different dosages along with different combinations of cytokinins to get the best effect (whatever you're looking for). If you type IAA and 2,4-D into google, you get tonnes of links that may be of use for trying to figure this out.
