Tell me if I understand the dunk, roll, and DEC procedure
    #3904297 - 03/11/05 08:02 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

There doesn't seem to be an FAQ on dunking and rolling and the DEC procedure so I'm going off of what I read from various threads.

1) When it is time to birth the cakes, dunk them in the fridge for 12-24 hours(roughly) in a solution of water and some H2O2(1/10 or cap full?)

2) After the dunk, roll the cake in dry vermiculite(sterilized I assume, by pressure cooking or boiling?) Then place some vermiculite on the top and bottom of the cake.

Can someone please elaborate on these steps if I missed anything or if it is incorrect? Thanks for the help.

i have been wondering the same thing, from what i have gathered from the last month strait of reading info from this sight is that basically you are right, 1.) soak cakes in water, tap if necessary, for 12-24 hours, 48 kills them. 2.) role in verm, not entirely sure if it needs to be sterilized, cover top and bottom. 3.) spray the vermiculite like it was a casing, that is to the just before saturation. after that I'm not sure exactly on what to do.

That's it, you have the idea down. 24 hour dunk is a bit overkill which can land you some soggy cakes. 12-16 will work just fine. Additionally, no need to sterilize the final verm layer but it definitely will not hurt.
Good luck.

Should you put them back into the incubator untill the mycelium starts to poke threw or just go strait to the fruiting chamber after that?

If you soak a cake for 48 hours ussually your cakes will still be alives so 48 does not kill your cakes. I read a post once where a guy dunked his cakes for 6 days and his cakes were fine.

I believe the correct dunking time procedure is 24 hours before first flush and then 12 hours between each flush there after.  Yes, use h2o2 1/10 with dunk, tap water ussually works fine for most people.  After dunking wash your cakes with some running water and clean hands.  Then dry the cakes with some paper towels.  Afterwards roll them in moist vermiculite and double end case your cakes.  Cakes are pretty resistant to contams so sterilizing the vermiculite is not always neccessary but can't hurt.  Just make sure the verm is moist and your cakes should be just fine. :mushroom2:

I thought you were supposed to dunk and roll after every fruit. are you supposed to dunk and roll before introducing to fruiting chamber?

WTf does double end case mean. You are just covering the cake with vermiculite to simulate a sort of casing layer. But you actually 'case' the ends..? Im confused here. Is this also garunteed to usually increase yield of cakes? (granted that everything is going how it should.)

It means make a layer of verm for the cake to sit on, and put another layer on top.

Im having alot of trouble with this concept...

I need some help here, because this is my first flush and the dunk-roll is new to me.

So i soak the cakes RIGHT OUT OF THE JAR after colonization for 12-16 hours, then i roll them in vermiculite and put them in the fruiting chamber like normal?

ALSO, whats the deal with misting? what do i do? i cant seem to grasp that concept.

thanks : )

dude, your making it harder than it is.

just dunk em overnight in tap water, roll in dry verm, and give em a good misting when put back in chamber!

read Hypaes thread on casing (really its the same theory for cakes yes.,. misting, it will sort you out.

Just watched the RR videos and they are amazing. Lots of information. There should be a sticky that tells first time growers to start there.
