Humidification question
    #3904129 - 03/11/05 05:10 PM (19 years, 21 days ago)

I have been reading the Simple Cubensis Growing Technique and I am about ready to start growing some B+. But theirs still one thing I don't understand. How do I maintain the humidity level? Only once does it talk about humidity and all it says is to set the cake on a damp layer of perlite. Is that all i have to do? It says nothing about misting or any other way of keeping humidity level up. Here is the link http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7919/pag/2 its towards the bottom of the page. Anny help would be great. :mushroom2:

the perlite will help keep the chamber humid. If you are fanning you will want to lightly mist after each fanning.

Sorry, I'm new to cultivation but what is fanning? and if I don't fan I shouldn't have to do anything else for humidification?

yes, you'll need to fan, mist and give light to the cake once you birth it. Keep reading you're right on track. Ask questions with any discrepencies.

If you don't fan, you're going to run into problems. Fanning is simply opening up your chamber and fanning it out,you can use your drip shield, for about 2 minutes, 4-8 times a day should be about a minimal amount of fannings. This is needed to replace the CO2 that builds up in your chamber with fresh O2. It will also keep the air in your chamber from becomming stagnant, which will help you keep cob web mold away. After fanning you need to mist to get your humidity level back up. Good Luck.Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick :mushroom2:

Method 1

Buy a heated propagator and layer it with wet perlite. Because it is a heated propagator it will worm the wet perlite, and create a nice humid atmosphere for your shrooms. Make sure you fan 3/4 times a day. If the perlite drys mist it with water.

Method 2

Buy a small fish tank fill it with water, and get a one of those heat tubes that go into the tank instant humidity. Fan 4/5 times a day. It gets very humid using this method.

Method 3

Buy a heat mat and a plastic tank put wet perlite in the Plastic tank, sit the tank on the heat mat. Fan 3 to 4 times a day and mist the perlite if it is getting dry.

Method 4

Buy a plastic cheap tank and just spray the whole thing with water. I don?t suggest this method as it would be hard work to keep the humidity up and would require allot of attention.

I?ve used methods 1,2,3 with great success.

I heard I was not supposed to mist directly on cakes or mushrooms under Any circumstances. Is this true? Also for method #2 how do I get the humidification from the fish tank into my fruiting chamber? My fruiting chamber is a Rubbermaid plastic tub by the way. Also In the growing method I am using I saw nothing about a misting shield like I did under the first link in basic grow guides. Is a misting shield a must? I have read both of these techniques about 6 times and I am very confused.

there is no misting shield. it's a drip shield to prevent condensation that builds up on the roof from dripping on your cakes. You aren't supposed to directly mist. Spray straight out, perpendicular to the casings, so the mist will gently fall on the cakes.

aaaaahhhhhh!!!! That makes so much more sense! thanx for the help! So all I need to do is fan about 4 times a day to keep fresh air in the chamber, keep cakes on moist layer of perlite and lightly mist above open chamber a few times a day. Did I leave out anything?

In method 2 you buy an aquarium heat tube, that will heat the water and create the humidity. You place a stand inside the tanks and put your casing inside the tank on the stand. You should never spray the cake unless it is covered in vermiculite. And never mist the mushrooms, that would invite molds. I?ve never used a misting shield in my life, so no it is not a must.

Also method 1 would look like this when set up.

thats pretty much it in a nutshell. I wouldnt sit the cakes directly on the perlite. Place a plastic butter lid or something under them to keep them off. They will get soggy if sitting directly on the perlite.

So should I lightly mist over the cakes and shrooms or keep perlite wet and have heat pad under it? Which do you guys think would work best and takes less time? also to keep perlite moist do I just spray directly on perlite and work around the cake and shrooms? Now you got me confused again! LOL.

the misting is not to keep the perlite moist. the perlite should stay pretty moist by itself, that is it's job. spray directly over top of the chamber so the mist falls down.

you dont need any type of heating mat/pad if the area your chamber is at is around 70 degrees F. All you need is a rubbermaid with a clear lid (for light) with perlite inside.

On a similar note... does anybody have any tips for determining if the air exchange in the PMP is good enough? I have an aquarium bubbler in mine and I think it's doing allright, but how do i know?

when you see the fruiting bodies pop up and they are very healthy. I'm sure if you have a PMP running the air exchange is fine.

Also. What is dunking? I know that you are supposed to "dunk" your cakes after each yield, but how and with what do you do this?

you are taking your cake and placing it in a large container of water so it is fully submerged. This is so the cake can rehydrate itself after each flush.
