temperature fluxuations

OK so I live in an old apartment with hot water radiators for heating... really shitty. Well sometimes I get home and it's hot then sometimes it's cold... so obviously the fruiting chamber is experiencing temp changes. I figure this explains the delay in pinning now I try to prop windows open or use a heater to reverse the effects but I'm not always there. I'd say the differences are from 72-80... is that REAL bad? I mean it's usually within the 70s... but not always steady. PS. Don't live in the midwest, these little doods hate it here!

Move...
the temp fluctuations will affect pinning, if you can use a safe space heater in a closet you may be able to stablize the temps to a better range.

will it just slow the pinning or will it completely miss it all together?

it will probably just slow it a bit, you can buy a thermostatic space heater as well, I had one that kicked on at specific temps, it did quite well before I got a furnace installed.

If it's that bad, you'll be money ahead to buy a good ice chest (or a couple of them), put a heat pad in there, and never worry about fluctuations again.

I had some of the same problems. I noticed it wasn't as huge of a problem with the fruiting as it was with the incubation. I lost a batch of jars because we had a subzero day, my landlord didn't turn on the heat quick enough, and my little aquarium heater couldn't keep up. Temps dropped to 68 in the incubator. They stopped colonizing altogether. I even waited two weeks for it to start up again but I think by then the moisture content was too low or something. too much of a shock I guess.
When fruiting with temp fluctuations, you really need to stress the other factors that bring on pin sets. I would also turn off the radiator in that room if I were you and put a big thick comforter type blanket over any windows. That should insulate the room enough from the outside, and you should get enough ambient heat from the rest of the apartment to keep temps stable. A space heater with a thermostat would help bring up the temp if it stays too low. Be careful with these though. Fire city...
But really I don't think 72-80 is too much of a wild swing. Think about how much the temperate fluctuates in nature just from day to night. Now if it was like 62-80 you'd have a problem.

yea, I actually put it into a closet so I have more control of the temperature and lighting... but my dreaded 99% RH is killing me!!! I've been manually fanning these things every 20-30 minutes! Thanks for the tips about the thermo heater, I'll prolly get one soon if it gets worse but for now we'll just see. Somebody pray for pins!
