Decaying shroom question?
    #3901410 - 03/11/05 09:27 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I'm assuming that shrooms left on the cake past maturity will decay. How badly does this spread contams to other cakes in the fruiting chamber? How long does it take shrooms left on the cake (1st yield) to decay? Thanks.

Well, uh, decaying shrooms are the result of biological decay and aren't going to create immediate "contams" so to speak. It's not like decaying shrooms are going to start a trich factory here. Down the road if left alone, sure, they could cause mold problems.

Why don't you find out? Who lets their mushrooms decay anyways? What's the point of this thread?

Heh well... I posted a thread looking for advice about what I should do with these shrooms I've got, because I'm heading out of town. I posted that thread about a week ago, and now I just want to know the consequences of leaving some shrooms in there if they begin to decay. I've got 1 cake out of my 8 that is fruiting ahead of the other ones, and the mushrooms that are growing on it are immature yet.

I would like to just harvest when I get back (In a week). I just don't want to jeopardize the other cakes by having a "trich factory" so to speak in there. That's why I'm asking.

Ah I see. Well in that amount of time your mushrooms won't go from breakdown>>contamination, it takes alot longer then that. A common misconception with missed aborts rotting and shrooms under the casing is that they will cause contams. That process takes weeks.

Your call whatever you do, they will definitely be nasty and basically beyond use if you let them rot away.

Let us know how it turns out either way, it's not like many people test this so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Okay, I'm going to leave them and I'll post results in a week or so, along with pictures.

Why not just pick the ones that are there? If you have time before you head out, that is. I mean, if you expect to be gone until those ones spoil, you probably wouldn't want to eat those anyway. Pick 'em now and reduce contamination worries, get SOMETHING out of those shrooms, and keep them from using up nutrients that could be used by shrooms you will be able to pick.

Agreed. I'd pick them before you leave, mature or not.

I also agree. plus dude. your going to have a hell of a mess on your hands with overmature mushrooms dropping a million-billion-vivillion spores all over the place. personally it getts hard to tell the aborts from the pinns with that much spore dust all over.

If when you leave they are much bigger then this:

I'd pick them. If that size or smaller, they wont even mature for like 4 days and they'll be fine for another 3.

If you do decide to leave them, put the chamber in a cooler section (low 70's or below, not below 50 though) of the house, that will slow down everything..

That was because after 3 days, they are no longer FRESH. Mushrooms are 90% water and so will lose some just sitting there in a paper bag or sitting out. Had you weighed that 12 grams when you picked them, you most likly would have found that it weighed closet to 20 then 12.

no no dude, you misunderstood me, i musn't have been clear.... it had been 3 days since they pinned... as in the shrooms were only half way to maturity, if even that. I ate them very very fresh, within minutes of picking them...
