Misting a casing after pinset

I've done quite a bit of reading on casings, but one thing I'm not too clear about. Hyphae's tek mentions that the biggest problem with casings after initial pinset is too much/too little moisture. I'm supposed to control that with misting when necessary right? Isn't it dangerous to mist when there is exposed mycelium and mushrooms? I have a misty mate with a little hose that I can mist with, so do I just use the nozzle to carefully mist around the shrooms or what? I'm just worried about letting water droplets settle on mycelium and shrooms, and I don't see how it is safe to mist a casing after the pinset.
-------------------- Excerpt from one of my textbooks: Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

Try to just mist between the mushrooms onto the casing itself. Just don't soak the actual fruitbodies.

In nature it's a natural occurrence, remember also there is plenty of fresh air exchanges/evaporation in nature as well! After pins are set very fine mistings are just fine and will help keep the substrate from excessive shrinkage and give your shrooms what they love the most, water!. GL

Okay then, just to clarify what I plan to do now. Let's say my pins are set, I've got lots of baby shrooms growing. I've got my misty mate with about 1:20 peroxide/water mix, I can just mist the entire surface of the casing, shrooms, mycelium and all?

Well first off get rid of the h2o2! it will retard growth. Mist from a distance using the finest mist possible shrooms and all Just like mother nature does it!

Misty Mates are awsome cause the SUPER fine mist. Hold it about a foot away from the casing and move over the casing spraying it directly. Move quickly and dont spray much, keep moving back and forth until you get it right. Dont SOAK the pins/primordia, or the casing. If the caps start turning white when you spray, put a splash less peroxide..you only need a little bit in that thing.

Okay, so I'm fine with misting everything now, except you two have contradicting opinions on peroxide. I know both of you are damn good at this, so I imagine either way is fine. I'd like to know why there is some disagreement though. PS (for scatmanrav) - Since you motivated me to buy a misty mate, and I just got mine in the mail today, tell me do you let the water stay in the thing or do you empty it when you're done with it? The instructions mentioned not to leave it full of water as it leads to bacteria growth.

Hey, scatmanrav, did you buy a misty mate for gardening from a gardening store? I was looking at their site and might get a personal one for dual-use technology. Have you seen them sold retail anywhere other than gardening centers or did you order yours off the net? Thanks.

Use distilled water which come very "clean". Peroxide simply is not necessary unless there are signs of possible contams. 6T once said if in doubt try to mimic nature. Or at least it was something like that? hehe

I peroxide everything. But I live in a very humid place. People from out of state think everything here smells like mildew. If you're from someplace with a lot less contams, you might forgo the peroxide. Here, anything that gives me the edge is welcome. I don't know, but you might find a lot of the splits in opinions about sterilization lengths are just because of location.

Its not to tough...I really dont add much...I just pour for a second to get a small amount in the bottom anywhere from 20:1 to 50:1, I'm not sure exactly. It doesnt hurt and it it takes little effort, so I do it. I dont always..but I usually do. I very rarly get casings that contam before 5 flushes...

Just to add my 2 cents, I'd avoid misting the fruits. Sometimes as the fruits get larger and mature you can mist them without problem, but I've seen tons of healthy pins abort after being misted. Just mist lightly between the pins and you'll be fine. I have no idea why it can rain like hell outside and all the mushies survive, but if you mist lightly indoors it can abort them. Anyway, that's been my experience. Good luck! RR

With all misters before the MistyMate, I did the same...these are meant to spray people directly in the face though on hot days so the mist is the finest mist of any I've seen and have not noticed a problem if you keep back a foot while misting and its fully pumped. Its not like rain even, but morning dew.
