Sterlilizing casing mix
    #3899517 - 03/10/05 08:54 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I plan on using the 50/50+ tek. It says to mix the dry ingredients (peat, verm, lime) then add water, then put the mix into a bag and PC it. Can I not just put the mix in a baking tray covered in foil and then put it in the oven for a while? I don't have a PC yet, so I need another way.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

Stick the moist mixture into a microwaveable container wiht some kind of cover and a small exaust hole.

That way you retain the moisture while not blowing shit up.

I do it for 2 1/2 minutes at a time, 5 alltogether.

I've got a foil baking tray that I want to use to sterilize the casing mix in (not to use as the actual casing tray). This way, when it's done being sterilized and cools off, I can just put foil or a lid over it, and use it as needed (patching and such). I can't put a foil tray in the microwave, so I need to know if putting it in the oven with a foil lid would be okay.

I wouldn't sterilize a peat based casing. I would use a microwave like o0brandnewcolony said or hot water pasteurization. I like the microwave.

Well, my foil tray in the oven question is still in the air, but I may try the microwave tek too. So I can just put my already mixed/moisturized casing mix in a tupperware type container and microwave it for 2 1/2 minutes twice in a row? Why can't I just put it in for five minutes? Also, how long to wait between the two separate microwavings?

I always just cracked the lid on the container a bit and microwaved for 8 min straight. Never had any problems.
