Playin with straw? Try this...
    #3898811 - 03/10/05 06:44 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Was pasteurizing some straw a few weeks back, and strained it. Still had the pot on the stove with the straw water in it, so I decided to take some 50/50 coir/verm and throw it in a pillow case and stick it in the straw water and pasteurize it too.

My plan being that the coir/verm would soak up some of that nutritious straw water. Then I mixed that with the pasteurized straw at a 1:1 ratio.
Needless to say, it worked very well, and the water left was still nutritious looking so I did some more coir/verm

Now I know I'm not the first to shed light on giving verm/coir nutrients like this. Just thought I'd share my experience.

So for everybody out there working with plain straw, give this a try and see if you don't like it too!

I'm confused, whats the point? Casing layer isnt supposed to have nutrients or your risking contams.

He mixed it with the straw.

Actually I did something similar today. The bottom layer of verm in my casing I soaked it in dung/straw tea.

Ah I see. I would probably try just verm in the straw mix...coir may be good for some substrates (the texture) but straw I dont think would benifit much. Maybe though...

Just dont case with that mix..

IN my straw/dung I added pure verm. @ bottom verm in dung/straw tea.

I will case 30/70 (verm/peat) with some hydrated lime added. I hope in a week.

If the 50/50 was being mixed into the substrate, that would be a great idea- not only would it hold more water, but it would hold nutrients as well.  But if the 50/50 is being used as a casing layer and contaminant barrier, wouldn't that become a bit risky?  As I understand it, vermiculite is used as a casing layer _because_ it has no nutrients (and hold water)- do you think adding nutrients to the casing layer might invite contams?

I suppose, conversely, if there are _enough_ nutrients in the casing layer and it gets colonized quickly enough, the problem ceases to be relevant..

Just wondering out loud I guess.  :smirk:

My bad, guess I skipped that and took too long posting. If that's the case, I agree that the coir could have been left out. But, he also said that IT WORKED WELL, so whatever works.

well the straw water throws the ph off and for some other reason straw water is not healthy to use. What i have done in the past is add drf, brf, qunioa flour etc.. This provides tons of reserve nutrients but like i have said before plan to loose a couple to moisture content being off.

No I'm not casing with it. I case with the old school Stamets peatmoss/verm/lime.

durban poison is right. It does throw off the ph a good bit. Maybe I'll counter that with a little lime.

Either way, the flushes are bigger so far and it keeps the straw from drying out so quickly.

EDIT:: I only did it cause my horse poo source is gone

I was wrong. This will not work (not well anyway).

I've come to the conclusion that the sucess I had was with compost water (got my stuff mixed up --- no labels).

I did this three more times with straw water and all three went green.

Figured I'd post this in case anyone saw it and was goind to try it.
