nutrients

Here is an idea that i had that I am not sure would work or not:

Would it be possible, when mixing up a batch of potential spawn-agar, grain, straw etc... to mix liquid household plant food in with the water before your sterilization procedure in order to boost the nutrient levels and allow for extremely fast colonization? what kind of nutrient ratio would mushrooms prefer- higher nitrogen?
And what would purists say about this? Perhaps this is cheating on some level. thanks for your reply.

its a very bad idea, fungi are nothing like plants and the mixture could even be toxic when consumed, assuming they colonized and fruited...

But...

An organic supplement high in nitrogen added at spawning or casing could increase overall yield significantly.  But that was not the question...

Probably the safest and best organic supplement for substrate low in nitrogen is a high spawn rate.
With a high spawn rate I mean up to 20% spawn.

Wouldnt a really good nitrogen supliment be worm castings? Arent poos of pretty much all kinds (that we use anyway) high in nitrogen.?

How about organic teas for plants too using such things to add nutes...

How about after you patuerize some straw/poo, via pillowcase method, take the extra water that you pastuerized with, PC it and add the normal peroxide mix then use that to mist your casings with. Then you would have nute enriched water, I think?

While the poo water is usfull (soak grains in it over night, use as water for PF jar, use as liquid culture water, whatever), you dont want to spray your casing with uncolonized nutrients. SOMETHING will eat the nutes, how do you know its gonna be the mycelium and not mold though? Even if the mycelium did take it over, you'd be spraying the casing surface, which you dont want to fully colonize. The mycelium doesnt pick up the poo water and move it somwhere else, it just eats it where it is. So even if it didnt contam, it would cause you some overlay.

Peroxide breaks down readily when exposed to organisims, air, and light so that would not keep it from contaming, if that was your thought.

Good point Scatman, I retract my previous post. But I think I will let the WBS soak in the straw/poo water. I didn't even think of that. Thanks,

Worm castings are 1-0-0 though, seems like it would be the best nitrogen suppliment?

worm castings do work quite well and they are low enough in nitrogen to be usable

oh, and if I manage to get another dry day I can go pick poo, it's been rain every other day for a couple weeks now

Thanks, I picked up some worm castings and have been looking for info. They seem to not be used much though, strange? With straw, how much worm castings should I put in? I was think 75% straw, 25% worm castings. I wont be using much spawn so... I could add more worm castings though...any thoughts?

Dont worry about the poo actually, agar is sending me some to try out shortly and I ordered some buffalo poop to try side by side with that. Thanks though! The Tamp culture didnt germinate when I shot it into a few jars anyway :frown: Course neither did my Pan spores...bastads.
