Yea all my friends that grow seem to have great success with bird seed..... I think its easy to work with to...not really any exact mixing to do as with BRF........ just steep it add some verm and gypsum and load the jars......

HQ can never get grain (rye and wheat) to work... but birdseed, preboiled and loosely packed to about 2/3 full, has always done right by her.

i think its best to try several and find out whats best for you. honestly, some people seem to favor one over the other; im not saying its dumb luck for everyone that one works and others dont, but thats what happened to her :)

oh, basic pros/cons: b/s allows for more innoculation points, but can be harder to shake (can have a tendancy to clump) compared to grains. rye/wheat is cheaper and perhaps is the industry standard (seems to be what tmc says, but ive got an older edition...). grains seem to *explode* easier than b/s, which opens up the chance for contams. grains also can harbor nastier things than b/s apparently does - so many recommend presoaking to release the endospores then pc'ing, whereas for b/s you can steep, pack and pc all in one day.
